Technology and Us: Final Response

Now that we have explored different information and opinion, including the data of your own life, it's time to revisit your perspective(s) on technology's influence.

1.) What information about technology surprised you the most? Why?

2.) In what ways has technology changed your life? Discuss an area with as much detail and explanation as you can. Example, you could tell us your opinion on how technology impacts intimacy, anxiety, sleep cycles, surveillance, critical thinking, the need to be "famous"/public, etc, etc. Any area you feel technology has significantly impacted you and your world.

3.) In what ways do you think technology is changing our future (work, learning, communication, relationships, etc.)?

4.) Describe your perspective towards technology. Are you more of an optimist or a pessimist? Why? Explain.

Criteria:

  •  Present a thoughtful discussion and argument on the topic: Technology’s influence
  • Select 2-3 distinct areas to comment on (ex: creative thought, privacy, biopower)
  • P.E.E. to explain and support your opinion
  • Edit for grammar, spelling and expression
  • I encourage you to comment on each others' arguments and ideas.

  1. 1.) The information about technology that surprised me the most was the second life world. I learned that second life is a 3D world where everyone you see is a real person and every place you visit is built by people just like us. It strains you to enter a world with infinite possibilities and live a life without boundaries, guided only by your imagination. However, the truth is that it causes much insecurity regarding “perfect” body shape. Moreover, it takes up a lot of time, includes potential costs, obsessive behavior concerning avatar appearance, and role playing in virtual world can lead to delusional behavior. As a result, second life world frightens me because the people who are addicted to these games often gain confusion between virtual reality and actual reality.

2.) Technology plays an essential role in my life. It has changed the way I live, learn, and socialize. To begin with, I need technology, to eat, to entertain, to cook, and to do many other daily functions. I am really dependent on technology to always keep me busy. Technology also affects my learning. Since the arrival of technology, I as a student have more options than before. Without the assistance of others, I can seek help through the use of the technology. On the internet, I can watch extra help math videos, search for information on various websites, and use word documents to type out my essays. However, technology has also had a negative impact on my life. Most of the time, I multitask in which I usually perform five tasks, on average, at one time like texting on my phone, watching TV, and many other things. This has disabled my capacity to focus and concentrate. Furthermore, technology has altered my health. For example, I recently got eyeglasses due to the stress I put on my eyes when I focus on my computer screen or my phone. Moreover, technology has also affected my relationships with my family and friends as I spend more time communicating through text or call rather than talking to them one to one. In conclusion, I believe in technology, I completely support it, but only to an extent. I say go ahead and enjoy what technology has to offer, learn about the world we live in, entertain you and engulf in it. Just until it doesn’t affect your appearance or the people around you and especially the person in you. Therefore, we as humans made machines we can’t let machines make us who we are.

  2. 3.) Technology is impacting our future significantly by advancing our work, learning, communication, and relationships. It’s reasonable to assume that as technology continues to accelerate, we can expect dramatic changes in the years and decades ahead. Firstly, there will be new devices and gadgets available to use in all workforces such as hospitals, fire departments, and many more. Furthermore, learning will be completely different. It will be more advanced where there will be fewer hands on work and more computer based material. For example, children will no longer be required to bring books to school. With more technology there will be no time available for family time and communication between family and friends, which will result in a decline in relationships. As a result, technology will have a dramatic affect to our distant future.

4.) I am more of a pessimist because I believe technology is taking over our lives. Even though we use technology on a daily basis to accomplish specific tasks or interests, it can lead to a negative impact on our life. Technology has replaced our old way of interacting. Using social networks people tend to neglect their real life. For instance, if a user can easily interact with 100 friends online, they will feel no need to going out to make real friends which at a later stage leads to loneliness. Furthermore, technology has caused job loss. Modern technology has replaced many humans; robots are doing of the jobs which used to be done by humans. Furthermore, technology has decreased the levels of competencies. Increased dependency on modern tools like calculators has reduced on our creativity. Therefore, it is our responsibility to use technology to improve our lives but we also have to make sure that we preserve our society and environment.

  3. 1) What has surprised me most about technology is how people can be so addicted to internet and their heath where in such dangerous. In Korea there had been numerous accounts of people in hospital for eye damage and other heath issues. I had no idea that people could get so addicted to the internet and other things and that how its like a drug like cocaine.

    2) Technology had changed my life in the way as talking to people you feel more reserved behind a screen instead of talking face to face. I feel that texting people you feel a lot more safe behind the screen and feel feel protected from people. I just feel the security behind my screen instead of talking face to face and dealing with everything that comes with that.

    3) I think technology had change relationship in way how people can know where you are at all time and you can't get away with anything. For example on facebook or on iphones there is a tracker on them where whenever u open your data or send a message on facbook it will track you and tell your location. I think this takes your relationship to a whole new leval with people on how they know where you are and when your trying to avoid someone you dont like or go behind someones back you can't cause they will know where you are.

    4) My perspective on technology is that i am pessimistic towards it. I think technology is taking over our lives and people are getting to caught up in technology and not getting enough of outdoors and life skills. People are so lived in a city style of life that when i went grad camping with people ther was a 1 in 10 people that could build a fire or even cook over a fire. People need to get more life skills instead of people getting so caught up in their phones or their computer.

  4. 1. The information that surprised me the most was the children in South Korea who suffer from internet addiction and attending camps in which they would try to cure the addiction. This seemed like quite an interesting idea but weird at the same time. Furthermore, the existence of such camps were never even in my mind and the fact that internet was an object a person could be addicted to. Also a game called “Second Life” a game in which you are a virtual character doing real life things for example working, buying items, and protesting etc. What surprised me the most was that people pay enormous amounts of money just to play games like these just to build a world in which they can work and create things they would like! Another game called “America’s Army” a game which is a first person shooter. What surprised me the most about this was people would set up places to play the game to try it out and whoever was good at the game got offered a job to work in army for real. The fact that people are recruiting young kids who play just a game is an idea which seems horrible just thinking about it. All these ideas show that technology has become something that may harm us than do better the fact people are addicted to certain games and develop eye problems, or even feeling like the game they place is reality rather than the real world. Even the fact that army officers are recruiting young men who are good at a first person shooter game.

    2. Technology has impacted my life in massive way I no longer need to ask people for help on my homework because I can just simply google anything to help me with my homework, I spend a great chunk of my day sitting on the internet listening to music , talking to friends, reading articles etc. Technology itself has interrupted my sleep patterns because now I don’t want to sleep I feel a need to just sit on my laptop or phone and just stay up longer leading to a horrible sleep pattern. I feel like technology has made me dumber in a way for example instead of trying to solve a certain math problem using my logic or thinking skills I can just google how to do the question or even youtube step by step instructions which makes me much more dependant on the internet rather than myself. I have had glasses since the age of 12 because of the video games I played when I was younger and now my vision still drops till this day because of the heavy usage in front of an LCD screen. Even children these days tend to rely on technology things like ipods or computers are all in easy access for kids. Young children can simply be exposed to something they shouldn’t be exposed to leading a great amount of problems. Anything can be accessed online meaning anything you would like to see all you have to do is simply type in a website and you will see it. I tend to multitask all the time now with the tv on while I do homework or sitting on twitter and doing homework. I feel like my multitasking skills have improved but my concentration skills have gotten worse because I don’t tend to pay attention to anything with full detail anymore.

  5. 3. Our future has been impacted by quite a bit due to the fact that technology exists we as humans have become much more lazy we don’t exercise as much, and we don’t leave our houses to hang out with friends because no we can simply just message them on a social networking website. I feel like learning has changed quite a bit to because we no longer really seek help from teachers but rather just search for answers online. Jobs now require a lot of computer knowledge running certain machines. Machines have also been taking over certain jobs causing unemployment in certain fields. I feel that at least 70 percent of jobs will require computer skills to be qualified for the job. The fact we can date people online or find matches online is something that disturbs me because we no longer have to go out and ask someone out face to face technology has changed everything. We have many friends on facebook or other social networking sites but not all of them are your friends only about 20 out of those 500 friends are your real friends. Children have also discovered social networking sites at such young ages being exposed to explicit content which they should not be seeing, or talking to people they shouldn’t be talking to.

    4. I feel like I am leaning more toward the pessimist side because of all the negative effects of technology. Young people wearing glasses more than ever, being lazy and sitting at home all day, and not doing outside activities anymore because we are glued to a screen. Although technology also has its positive side for example cars were invented so we can get around easier, and inventions such as planes which let us travel across the world. Technology has helped us advance as a human race but at the same time forced negatives effects upon us. People can now access things that shouldn’t be accessed easier than before; piracy is a big issue where any movie or song can just be downloaded online without paying which is another way of stealing. We can post things about others so the whole world can see it; we are no longer private our locations and the places we go can be seen online. We tend to spend quite a bit of our days using technology for example cell phones, laptops, and TV’s. We have become dumber with memory because now we can just simply tell our phones to remind us of certain things, we can learn things the easy way now by simply finding a video online teaching us rather than working hard to learn something. The amount advertisements online can play with our minds, and the addiction of certain things, we have made using laptops, and cell phones a habit rather than something to use for fun. In the end I feel technology has put a negative impact on us as humans and certain items should not exist.

  6. 1) What surprised me the most about how we use technology was definitely how we are affected by it so much! Whether it is just walking and staring at text messages to playing RPG games. It was the idea of how far technology has grasped us so firmly that we are unable to break free at times. For example there was that rehabilitation camp for the people in South Korea. Most of these patients were people were students such as myself. Most of these people lacked many things such as decrease in attention span, insomnia and rise in anxiety. Then theirs intelligence? Even though I think it is a matter of how we use technology. Rather than technology it self, decreasing our intelligence. Even after being told all this, I was still fully aware of how technology has this hold on me. Though it possible for a person to break free from this hold.
    2) Technology it self has made such a huge impact in our every day lives. For me, I find it useful for finding information and having this craving of satisfying my curiosity. (Yes, I have Infobesity) Since I always take in a bunch of information and read them superficially. Even when I text some one I’m always anxious and constantly wait for a reply. Even when I had Internet at my house I always snuck my laptop into my bed and start doing a bunch of things that interest me. Whether it is reading something online to watching something odd. Technology it self isn’t bad thing, at least that’s my opinion. It is the user and how we play it in own lives. It provides many of the things we can’t express openly, medical care to prolong one’s life span, Surveillance on finding a culprit to even those people how feel neglected. For me, technology make’s me connected. Most of the time I feel that’s it hard to connect with others. And sure people can argue that its technology fault. But it mostly our selves that stop us from connecting with others.

    ReplyDelete
  7. 3) There are so many ways technology has made a huge impact in changing our future. For example there’s medical discoveries like Insulin, which help people who suffer from irregular amounts of high or low blood sugar. With out this discovery many people would have suffered severely from this in balance. Not only dose technology help with medical advances. It also brings a role in the everyday classroom. Personally technology for me helped me keep up school. There was this one time I was sick(For those who don’t know I’m never get sick and stay home –this case was special) for more than two weeks I kept emailing my teacher’s constantly trying to keep up with my assignments. There is also the concept of dropbox, flash drives and even finding different ways of learning concepts online. Technology advances so fast that sometimes all this amazes me. Since I can carry all this information and even ask for help with. Even on your website, there many resources that are there for us to use. Whether it is practicing and polishing our English 12 writing or even something that may find interesting and interactive for inspiration and a different outlook on certain topics. This is opinionative writing piece is one of them.
    4) I really think I’m leaning more in to the optimistic perspective over technology. Since I have many hopes that technology advancement will help those problems that may reverse the constant problems. Whether it is medical or environmental, I really believe that one day there might be a device that could reverse global warming by purifying the air pollutants. Even the idea of having the cures for certain diseases like cancer could be eliminated. For me technology is something I find that is wonderful thing. It is something that brings hopes to any person. A personal example it having technology to communicate with people I never get to see and talk much, to relax from tensions and even helping me feed my curious mind of constant questions. It is not technology’s fault that we constantly want to be connected but our choice to be connected and never try to refrain from doing so. It isn’t technology’s fault that we are constantly keeping out privacy from disappearing but the person who choose to spread those unwanted pictures around. Technology it self is tool we use for the better good. It the person at fault for using technology in a way where people may be scared or even addicted to being connected, a wanting of nothing more then a feeling that you are in the loop. It is the person who is using it, nothing more than when a person has the choice to drive drunk rather than then take a taxi.

    1) The information about technology that has surprised me the most is that the US Army uses its own online shooter game as a recruitment tool. This is shocking to me because the Army would actually spend billions of dollars to have these games at US Army places. The most shocking thing about it is that it is the most successful recruiting tool of the history of the US Army, and it makes people think that war is supposed to be a game.

    2) Technology has changed me because for one, it really messes up my sleep cycle. I do not use much technology other than a computer or a video game console, but when I go to sleep, it sometimes take me an hour to really fully get to sleep. When I wake up, I really feel like I didn't get enough sleep even if I slept for 10 hours. I always wake up more tired and sluggish than I used to be.

    3) Technology is changing our future in communication negatively and positively because negatively it makes peoples grammar much worse, with people typing in all lower case fonts, or using abbreviations as substitutions for other words such as "lol", "k", or "lmao". It also makes people more anti social in a way when people talk to each other on Facebook or Twitter, but never really often face to face. It is also changing us positively because, there are new ways of communicating that you would never really thought about 10 years ago. For example, text messaging can now be used for emergency cases like texting 911 during a bank robbery. You can also now video chat with people from anywhere in the world. It doesn't matter if you are from Canada and the person you are chatting with is from Japan.

    4) I am rather optimistic toward technology because it is really changing us in a positive way. It is now easier to pay bills using a tablet device, which is saving paper because they don't have to be sent to your mail box, but sent to your tablet right away. Sports can now be watched on various mobile devices. You can use your iPhone as a "debit card". Sure, there are bad things about technology, like sending too many text messages. But these inventions obviously had good intentions, but people abuse it. The truth is that technology has been with us forever. It's technology that makes us advance through the stone ages and have us live in the world we live today. Technology is advancing as we speak, and there are good intentions for it. The 3D printer which was recently in the news for saving a child's life by printing organs. But technology has good intentions, it is just how we use it that can determine the impact of technology in our world.

  9. 1) The information about technology that surprised me the most was the 3D tactical shooter game made by the American Army because I never thought that the American Army would go this far to recruit teenagers. I believe this pursues war especially since accessing the game is easy.

    2) Technology has changed my life because it made me depend on "Google " to find the answers to my homework questions instead of looking through textbooks. This problem affects my critical thinking. This issue makes me lazier and not wanting to try to find the answer myself .I give up faster when I can't the answer. I made a habit of choosing the easy way out rather than working through the questions. This also affects my learning because I don't understand the concept ,I just copy it down.

    3) Technology is changing our future by giving us access to more variety of information rather than limited information. For example if we are unsure of something we can go online and research about a topic. It gives statistics , opinions , and facts on any topic. On the other hand , technology also affects the way we think, react , and live. It changes our everyday lifestyle. We are harmed physically and mentally by using technology. For example eye sight problems, back problems , addiction and many more. In the future technology is going to take over so we are going to lose our creativity.

    4) My perspective towards technology is half and half because technology has its benefits and its bad side. The benefits are we get more access to information about anything by just sitting at home and we can connect with people easily around the world. The downside is we become addicted and we depend on it too much. It harms our health and affects our skill of building upon knowledge. Technology plays a huge role in everyday life and makes a huge impact on us.

    (1) The information that surprised me the most about technology was data mining. The fact that internet software keeps track of the web history of users is a bit scary. They take this information in and use it to cut costs and increase revenue. In return, they provide us with advertisements based on our data usage. This makes privacy a big issue as the system is constantly keeping an eye on us. This also constricts what we like and dislike and if we are being fed information only about things we are interested in, then the opportunity to explore new things is very limited. This makes us narrow-minded and unable to accept change.

    (2) I feel that technology has taken over my sleeping cycle. Every time I get a chance to sleep early, I end up receiving texts from my friends and it’s gotten into such a bad habit that I keep my phone on my bedside and have to reply right away even if I’m dying to sleep. Then every morning, I wake up and regret staying up late but I still end up constantly repeating this over and over again. Technology has also weakened my ability to spell words correctly. To this day, I still can’t spell “their”, “definitely” and “believe” without spell check or autocorrect and I spell probably as prolly just because it is faster to type. It has also made talking through text more superficial as the emotions “LOL”, “LMAO” and “HAHAHA” are not what are actually being done when the text is sent. I personally use “LOL” in every text of mine and half the time, I’m not even laughing out loud. There have also been times where I feel the urge to LOL in person to someone. I am good with holding back on saying it but if I were to follow through with it, it would be pretty embarrassing. Overall, I feel that our brains are just becoming more dependent on technology and don’t work for themselves.

    (3) I feel that technology is changing our world in many ways and taking over. It has become a necessity in order to live everyday life and many individuals state that they feel incomplete without their electronics. Technology plays a huge role in the work and school environment since most presentations at work are presented through a PowerPoint and at school, most teachers have discontinued using chalkboards and whiteboards while teaching lessons. Smart boards are now taking over overheads and the upcoming generation will probably never be able to experience what it felt like to work on a chalkboard or whiteboard. Outside of the work or school environment, we can talk about how some individuals use technology such as dating sites to find their soul mates or even keep long distance relationships going. One can feel so close to another just by talking over a video chat or through a phone call.

    (4) Towards technology, I believe that I am both an optimist and a pessimist. I am an optimist because I believe that in this modern generation, it can be a way of bringing people together such as family members that live far away in a different country or town. This can bring them together through texting, calling or even video chatting. This breaks the distance between people, making it easier to keep in touch. On the other hand, I am a pessimist because I believe technology can get extremely addictive such as the internet. You start to feel the need to keep checking your Twitter or Facebook accounts daily, so you can stay up to date with what is going on in society or even to express your own personal thoughts online rather than to somebody in person. Therefore, I am stuck in the middle with my perspective towards technology.

  11. 1.) While going through the technology unit, many things alarmed me. One in particular was the internet rehab camp in Korea. I couldn’t believe that an internet rehab camp actually exists somewhere in this world. If something like that was to exist, I would expect it to be in North America simply because many people here are addicted to their computers or smart phones. I feel that in the future, it is possible for a smart phone rehab clinic to open up somewhere in North America as well because we also greatly need it. In the video, there were many individuals participating in the camp and those individuals were primary male. This did not surprise me, even though it may seem like I’m stereotyping. I think the camp mainly consisted of boys because many boys play video or computer games and video games can be quite addicting. Many of the boys at the camp were there because they were addicted to playing games and that got in the way of their homework, social and family lives and health. Technology was such a big problem in their lives that it even started impacting their health. Some of the participants of the camp claimed they had eye problems, back problems and many other health issues that got in the way of them leading a positive life. The video made me think. How profoundly does gaming addiction and internet addiction impact peoples lives overall? Because they are spending so much time gaming and making up a duel reality for themselves, are they able to communicate with others effectively, face to face? Are they able to pick up skills such as talking, listening and effectively interacting, that they will need in the real world to get a job and meet new people? Can they pick up social cues as well as others? Maybe the technology boom in Korea has something to do with the fact that in the past generation, people were not as wealthy and technological devices weren’t as easily accessible. In the new generation, technology is more accessible and available for a cheaper cost, parents have climbed up the social and economic ladder and now their kids are living comfortable lives and the parents buy them everything that they want simply because the parents didn’t have all these resources when they were growing up. They don’t want their children to miss out on the latest craze. They feel this may lead to a deprived upbringing. A lot of parents are recognizing that technology and internet addiction is a serious problem, hence in Korea they have a rehab camp set up for it specifically. But media, which is a by-product of the technological boom, tells parents through subliminal messaging that technology will allow your kids to advance and that kids need technology to be educated and intelligent. No parents want to deprive their kids of opportunities or intelligence. They want their kids to have all the things that the neighbors kids have and they want their kids to fit in. For example, universities and schools want kids who can use technology. to be continued....

  12. Work places want people who have a certain typing speed and are able to comprehend Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Why would parents deny their children those opportunities simple because a few people are saying that technology is not good for us? Media basically tells us that if you are not one with technology, then you are not going to be considered smart and capable in this world. For example, someone with an engineering degree may be considered more intelligent than an individual with a degree in horticulture. The person who knows how to use a computer and Google search information will more likely get the job compared to someone who doesn’t know how to use a computer and obtains knowledge through books or the encyclopedia, something completely forgotten these days. I feel that technology is a serious problem in places that have recently gained some sort of economic and social success such as China, India or Korea, because the people of those places are used to the fact that only the top few individuals who are wealthy are able to afford items such as computers and phones. But now that the population of the middle class and upper middle class has gone up tremendously and technological devices have become so affordable through cheap labor completed by the lower class, more and more people can afford devices like smart phones. A good analogy for this is, it’s like having a little child who’s never been able to afford candy and has only watched the rich neighbor indulging on it. But now, the candy has become more accessible and cheap and the child has an abundance of it hence causing the child to splurge and get cavities. It’s like when you haven’t eaten for days and when you finally eat, you end up eating more than you should have.

Technology has changed my life in many ways. Firstly, it has given me access to a world of information. Anything I want to know is at the tip of fingers. I just have to turn on my computer and it’s there for me to see. Having this much information accessible to me can be a good thing and a bad thing. For example, if something important is going on in the world, such as a natural disaster or a political uprising, I will know about it in a second just as long as somebody makes a tweet or status update about it. This helps me stay connected with crucial news stories and much more. Also, having access to so much information and so many opinions helps me form my own opinion and stay informed. On the other hand though, having that much information before me can be a curse too. I may come across information that I don’t want or that I don’t agree with. I may also come across information that is fake or altered or I may just come across way too much irrelevant information knows as “infobesity”. For example, when using Wikipedia for a research project, I could get tons of facts that someone has made up and this could cost me my project. In my life, technology redefines the word knowledge. When I was growing up, knowledge meant information that you have acquired through research, reading, libraries, speaking to qualified people and once I obtain that information, evaluating it in my own head to weed through what is good and what is bad. Knowledge also meant going out and trying things for myself. Knowledge meant physically experimenting and it also meant hearing stories and cultures passed down orally through family and friends. Recently, because of technology, knowledge and acquiring knowledge has been redefined or changed dramatically. Knowledge today is whatever you search for online and is fed to you by the latest search engine whether that be Google or Bing. You just search and get exactly what you’re looking for. You don’t have to leave the comfort of your home or experiment to figure it out yourself. It’s that easy. But I feel that this easy access to data and information has drastically decreased my reading, spelling, and comprehending skills. I never try to actually understand why something is so. If Google says 9 is a multiple of 3, I’ll just believe it and not validate that info on my own. If I had to write a research paper without the use of internet, I probably couldn’t do it because it would be too much effort to go to the library and physically flip through the pages of a book and weed through what data is relevant and what I don’t need. A couple of months ago, I had to write a math research paper and part of the criteria was to use valid internet websites for research but also use a minimum of one book. Students in my class were irritated and angry. They didn’t want to visit the library and check out a book and they convinced the teacher that no one needs books to be research these days and finally the teacher cut the book idea out. Shockingly, at first, I was slightly frustrated about having to use a book but after the whole incident, I began to realize how underappreciated books are, even though they were one of the first sources to give us our knowledge. What is most ironic here is that most of the knowledge used to make the first technological devices probably came from books and libraries. Also, if I wanted to become famous, it is so much easier for me to do so because of the internet and sites such as Youtube. I don’t have to go join a modeling agency or find an agent to get me into movies and I don’t have to go office to office giving them my mixed tape like Taylor Swift did. Instead, like Justin Bieber or Cody Simpson, I could just upload a Youtube video of myself singing or dancing and there is a chance that I become a star.

Technology is greatly changing our future and education. Just recently, I learned that by the time I go to SFU, SFU is going to get rid of paper textbooks and require all students to purchase an I-pad or e-reader. When my parents went to school in India, they used to write on mini chalkboards and if they were lucky, some paper, which was highly expensive. When the generation before mine went to school, they used paper, hardcover, books to learn. Now when I go to school, I’m going to have to invest in an e-reader and this is going to drastically change my education forever. I agree that books waste paper and trees and that overtime books will cost you more than an e-reader, but I feel there is a beauty to picking up a hardcover book and reading it. Some people may pick up knowledge better if they read from a traditional book. I find it ridiculous that we even have to call paper books old, or traditional. Books should just be books. If you like the feel of the paper, the bending of a new book, or the scent of fresh, untouched pages, then you should be allowed to read that way. If you feel e-readers will save the environment, then that is your personal choice as well. Although, I have to say that e-readers and technological devices do have their ways of polluting the environment as well. Many of the resources and minerals needed to make I-pads are mined in unsafe, dirty mines in third world countries by children and although paper is wasting trees, trees can grow back if we plant them, but minerals and metals take thousands of years to form. Most schools these days, whether that is elementary, high school or university, use technology in teaching. Teachers may ask students to vote for answers through websites such as polleverywhere.com and students without smart phones are at a disadvantage. Even preschools and daycares have I-pads and laptops that the kids play with. If children flip through the pages of a book on an I-pad, will those kids even know how to hold and use a paper book? Technology is changing communication dramatically. Most people communicate through text messages, emails, tweets, Facebook messages, Face Time, or Snap Chat and rarely do people even make phone calls. Many of my friends have told me that they find phone calls awkward so they would rather have me text them. If people cannot even talk through phones, then will people be able to communicate face to face, in person? I don’t think so. Many people have lost their interaction skills greatly and it’s quite sad to see. People that only communicate through text or email often find it awkward and difficult to talk to people in person. They may not be able to find the right words to say in person because on the computer or through phone, you can take time to think of something to say or word it correctly whereas in real life, you’re on the spot and this makes many people uncomfortable. But I think it’s a human instinct to be able to know what to do and say on the spot. If we stop communicating face to face, we’ll loose this instinct. Also, when communicating through a computer or device, people often say things they don’t mean or wouldn’t say in real life. For example, it is so much easy to bully others online but those bullies most likely wouldn’t have the courage to say those mean things in person. I think technology has impacted communication because intuition is not longer used or valued. You are not able to pick up people’s behaviors or body language through a text message and figure out what they are trying to say to you indirectly. Instead, you are forced to assume what people are saying and this leads to miscommunication. If we talk face to face, we can see people’s reactions and be intuitive towards them. If we never talk in real life, I feel people will begin to loose their intuition skills, which are very important in life.

My perspective towards technology is a pessimistic one. Although technology has done a lot for us and has helped us progress to some extent, I feel that even without it, we were well off. There are some aspects of technology we do need such as the printing press because this makes creating books so much easier, but I don’t think we need things such as e-readers. They are unnecessary and wasteful. Also, if we have computers who make our lives easier, we don’t need smart phones, which are simply mini computers in our pockets. Some aspects of technology are beneficial such as technological innovations in medicine. These things actually help humanity and increase our prosperity. As much as I enjoy learning about space exploration and the possibility of extraterrestrial life, I feel to some extent that the money spent on the technology of the space program is slightly wasteful. That money could go towards something more helpful. The main reason why I am pessimistic about technology is because if it falls into the wrong hands, it can be disastrous. Weapons are technology and they can hurt us if in bad hands. Also, technology is power and we don’t want that power going to the wrong people. Hitler was very fond of advancing this technology and he did so but with his technology, he only hurt people and caused devastation. Technological advances such as the creation of nuclear weapons can be considered beneficial to humanity but I think nuclear weapons are a form of technology that is more harmful than good. I think technology makes us greedy and lazy. If we have one thing, we want another and this time it must be better than the first. If we have the first I-phone, we need the 2nd and 3rd as well. What is the difference between all the I-phones anyways? Shouldn’t we just be thankful that we are privileged enough to have a phone? We have machines, which prints books for us and this makes us lazy, but now, why do we need to become lazier and have e-readers, which flip the pages for us too?

    1. Information about technology that surprised me the most was how they have programs to help you stay off-line. For example, South Korea was one of the first countries for internet psychology. They re-introduced kids to physical contact such as, sports, scavenger hunts and other activities. Furthermore, I was also surprised that we spend about an average of 7.5 hours in front of a screen. Which means about half of the day is wasted in front of a screen. This means you spend very limited time doing anything else such as physical activity. Another fact that shocked me was that a Renaissance man in our world would be a Einstein. This shows that we have actually lost intelligence and skills over the years because technology makes everything so easy.

    2. Technology has changed my life because it has affected my spelling. For example, before internet wasn’t that easily accessible I would try my hardest to try to sound out the word but now I just go on the internet and find the word. I have also noticed that my critical thinking has been greatly affected because instead of thinking if that belief is true and reflecting on it I usually go to the internet first and see what other people have to say. This affects me because instead of sharing my true beliefs I am actually sharing what other people think. Technology has caused me to get lazier and just take the easy way out on everything.

    3. Technology is changing our future because now instead of communication person to person we would rather just text them. Also our communication skills have decreased because we don’t spend much time actually talking. We also always hesitate to call anyone. We even do important things over text instead of face-to-face. Work is affected by technology because now machines and robots are taking over peoples jobs. For example, the BC Smart Meters have taken the jobs away from the people who would usually check the meter to calculate energy consumption. This is a big problem because if people are losing their jobs they could go into welfare. Technology is also changing the way we learn. For example, now we use the internet way more than we use books and encyclopedia’s, which makes students lose important skills like reading comprehension.

    4. My perspective towards technology is that I am optimistic because technology has improved many aspects of life for example, medicine because of technology we can more accurately diagnose and treat certain forms of cancer and more easily narrow down diseases while improving a person’s health with drugs that are made for them. Another thing is that technology has made it easy to buy things like tickets and clothing and other things in the comfort of your own home. So I believe that technology is good and that we should use it responsibly and that technology is going to get bigger day by day.

1)Technology has improved and affected the world drastically. The most surprising statistic that stunned me was the amount of hours an individual can spend using technology on an everyday basis. Statistics show that an average individual can spend around 7.5 hours a day in front of a screen. While we spend almost a third of our day staring into a computer, television, and/or phone, we lose out on the time we could be spending with loved ones. Texting, Skype, BBM, and other instant messaging services are keeping today’s generation from having any face to face interaction. This could cause these generations to have poor communication skills especially in person. These negative aspects of these virtual worlds in computers and cell phones are physically affecting our body. The 7.5 hours spent surfing the web or texting that stranger you met online are cutting the hours one may spend going to the gym or playing sports. Also, the 7.5 hours we spend per day could go into cooking healthy nutritious meals rather than heating up frozen dinners or making that trip to McDonald’s for a greasy burger. Furthermore, looking into bright screens all day affects our eye sight which we may take for granted and not realize we are physically hurting our bodies. Moreover, another surprising fact that caught my eye was how people play video games for hours that make us cyborgs. Second life is a virtual reality game where anyone can participate and create their very own avatar that plays a role like in your first life. This made an impact on retail, where people spend hours doing the things they do in real life, but choose to do in a video game. This affects everyone because you start to lack the things you do in your first life and sometimes end up forgetting how to hold a conversation face to face with someone. Lastly, I was surprised how a computer can have so much power and can create cyber bullying. This is when anyone around the world goes online to bully others, whether it’s on a social network such as Twitter, Facebook, or even Hotmail. Cyber bullying has been a major cause for many people to commit suicide, which is shocking because you would think internet cant and wouldn’t cause you or your peers in harm, but it definitely can. This issue is still continuing in our society and is increasing by people making jokes or making fun of someone else that dramatically hurts the other person’s feelings causing them to put themselves in harm.
2)Technology has changed my life in both a good and bad way. In a way, technology has made it easier for me to communicate with all my peers and family members during the day more. It helps keep all your close peers in touch with a text or a phone call away. Moreover, technology has improved learning by having access to computers at schools, libraries, and our homes. It has helped me to search up any information I need when a teacher or an older guidance isn’t around to help. Work can be done a lot faster by using programs on a computer such as, Microsoft Word. This is a major help because it makes your piece of work neater as well with helping you correct any spelling mistakes you’ve made. Furthermore, using a computer helped me find a job by creating a resume and going online searching for jobs and submitting my resume to any company’s website. However, the negative effect that has caused is my laziness and lack of face to face interactions with others.

3)The more technology we use the more it affects our future. It effects our learning a bit because if we keep searching all our answers on the internet, then we are using less of our brain which makes us not think for ourselves. Our brain is much smarter than a computer, but at times people depend too much on technology then themselves. However, using a computer can be a great resource to prove ourselves, but as generations continue, I can see that kids are developing a habit to use computers more than a library. Technology has also caused businesses to shut down such as, Blockbuster. Everyone would go to Blockbuster to rent a movie or a video game to entertain themselves, but now everyone started to download movies, TV shows, and even games that caused Blockbuster to run out of their business. It’s a faster and even cheaper to do this and is basically why everyone chooses to download their stuff, then renting it. Also, technology is affecting relationships throughout the world by always communicating through text, rather than meeting up with that person and having a conversation. This affects our communication skills with others and we develop a habit talking to others behind a screen and start to find it hard to communicate with them in person.
4)My perspective towards technology is both an optimist and a pessimist. Technology has taken over the society in different good and bad aspects. I am in the middle because technology is dynamic in today’s world and makes everything easier, but can cause laziness. Being in a relationship and constantly texting and expressing ourselves on text is far more different than starring at that person in the eye and showing them our emotions. I feel that a lot of people lack this because they would rather text then call that one important person at the end of the day. Technology can ruin our own image and relationships. If one feels they are safe and trust that person to send an exclusive picture of themselves, thinking only they would see can, can become a tragic mistake. You would think over texting you had gained all their trust, but others can seem so much more different face to face and sometimes we forget this. Perhaps, that person sent that picture of you to someone else and sent it again to another person. This can destroy your image, cause harm upon you and even create others judging you. For me, I try to maintain texting because it’s always nice to keep in touch with a few close friends, but can cause a lot of distractions during school or work hours because of that anxiety to approach your phone when you get a text. My daily use of technology consists of texting and using the internet to help me with school such as watching math videos to help me when I’m stuck. There are a lot of negative aspects of technology today, but I believe if we use it safely and be smart about it, then you wouldn’t have any problems with technology.

  19. 1.) I was truly shocked to learn that technology is becoming too advanced for our standard of living. It is quickly overpowering normal human behavior that it is actually taking over lives to the point where people are addicted to it. Since it acts like an illness, many people are actually coming up with ways to help addicted users disband themselves from further using technology. As an example, boot camps are created in South Korea for children who have completely attached themselves to technology. They treat this web addiction as a serious obsession. Due to extensive and constant usage of technology, physical-related activities are barely performed by children and teenagers. They are all reliant on technology to keep them entertained and preoccupied. This is truly robbing them of their childhood. Technology is supposed to be used to help us live easier, not corrupt our way of natural living.

2.) Technology definitely plays a vital role in almost everyone’s present-day lives. In the category of education, I would say that technology is very efficient in helping students learn any subject material with the proper resources. Instead of using chalkboards, teachers now use overhead projections, slideshows, video clips, and blogs to educate their students with the right information. This is a great advantage for students, not only through learning in school, but also through doing research and notes. As a student, I can say that technology really assisted me on research projects. Through the web, I can access any information that my homework is based on. It is ultimately crucial when I need mathematical help, but all I would need to do is rely on Youtube to provide me step-by-step demonstration. However, in the same time, technology is considered distracting. In one week, according to my technology log worksheet, I would spend a total of 30 hours on the internet while I would spend less than 10 hours doing homework. Most students, like me, are prone to procrastinate especially when they are linked to different social networking sites, online games, and much more while doing homework. Even more so, since the internet is more preferable than doing homework, the homework performance rate goes nowhere.

  20. 3.) Undeniably, technology has a way of shaping the future. It has now become a necessity to either have a computer, a laptop, and a cellphone in a household. With this, the demand of technology is always on the rise, especially when new versions of technology are introduced. The mass production of technological gadgets results to polluting the Earth. I literally believe that technology is contaminating the future, future position of the planet that is. Our environment is being disrupted daily, not only through the means of air pollution and toxic waste, but also through the increase of landfills with old versions of technology. Since technology is constantly improving and developing, people tend to replace their old models for the latest ones. Just because there is a little improvement with the technology, it does not mean it will not be as efficient in doing its work. With this said, not only does technology have a hold of our lives, but also on the environment.

4.) I am leaning towards the pessimistic side. Technology was first invented to make human lives easier to manage. However, we’ve been abusing its usage for all the wrong reasons. Instead of using technology as the source of our aid, it is now the source of our destruction. For instance, when I used to live in the Middle East, all I had at home was a camera, a TV, and a radio. I only used these gadgets when it was necessary. I knew when to take a break from using these objects and I knew my boundaries. I felt well off without extensively using technology during those days. How I see it, since people are capable and comfortable working with technology, they have seem to adapt to its ways and conformed to its unlimited possibilities to the extent where they can do almost everything and anything with the technology. There are certain things that technology, like the computer, is really used for. I don’t think entertainment and socializing with friends are one of them. I, however, prefer living with simplicity like the olden days, with limitations on using technology. I do not want to substitute my natural way of being with any electronic means.

  21. 1. Americans army.
The whole idea of the army coning gamers to join and fight for them was mind-boggling. It was actually really unsettling. The US government had spent 32.8 million dollars on it and let people play it for free to just handpick the shooters they wanted, the people with the greatest scores. I think that is ethically wrong. It’s like checking how good someone would be at conducting dogfights on how well they trained their pokemon. I personally think there would be no connection on how well someone does in a game compared to real life. People who play video games are generally unfit and to be in battle, at war, you must have decent stamina. It may be their best way of recruiting soldiers, but how good are their soldiers, really? War, fighting, and other army activities are tiring, scary, and scaring both mentally and physically. Video games, however, are not. You do not actually die. My main point here is that it doesn’t make sense. Yes, you get more soldiers. If they do not want to be there and are probably unfit, how well would they actually do in combat?

    2. Ever since I was two I have used computers and I got my first portable game device when I was six. It has always been with me and grew along side me. However, now that I have been given my own laptop I have been staying up later. I blog about everything until the sun rises. It’s not that I do not see anything wrong with it I just cannot stop. I can easily spend seven hours on the computer afterschool with strangers who only know me by my plethora screen name, and on weekends I can spend from noon (when I wake up) to five in the morning doing absolutely nothing on the computer. It’s ridiculous. Actually, that’s a lie. I do write stories and draw on the computer quite a bit—only when Tumblr is being boring, though. At least I get away from such madness at school, right? Wrong. All I do at lunchtime is sit in the hallway playing pokemon. The only plus side of that is that oneday I will become a pokemon master (that was a joke).
I’ll go to my friend’s house or my boyfriend’s house and we just play videogames or maybe watch a movie. I can honestly say I don’t know how anyone has gotten to know me; I’m pretty distant from society. Video games are fun, though. I can die a billion times in Bioshock or Deadspace and just laugh it off and enjoy myself. It is just fun, alone or with friends.

    3. Everything is based on technology now-a-days. Medical or creative, they can be done with technology. I cannot say much about medical advances and how technology affects most work places, but I can comment on the art community. Artists often look down on artists that use predominantly traditional mediums. They are seen as lesser, almost less skilled when it is indeed harder to work in tradition than digital, on most occasions and in my own opinion, of course. I believe people who have better skills in technology are seen as more suitable for a job. This can be very unfair to people who have practiced in the old ways and have become very skilled. Technology is modifying the way we work and how we will work, everything that is work will soon be based off technological advances. I believe it is an unavoidable future.

  22. 4. I love technology. I love being able to type up stories and have plenty of copies to pass around. I love drawing colorful pictures and posting them for the entire internet to see. I love reading blogs on other people’s lives, see how they think and what they find funny. I like to get into their minds like that; it helps me understand how others can think which helps me immensely with story writing and character development. On the internet people can easily open up to strangers, after all. The internet provides a very easy way to research things without having to hang around a library for weeks at a time, reading about the things I must research for my stories. It is simply easier. However, I know that I would be lying if I said that is all I use technology for. I love to reblog things on tumblr for hours on end, watch rather idiotic videos on youtube from dusk to dawn, do anything that distracts me from being productive. In short, I’m saying to most individuals it does a lot of harm, but also can be very helpful.
In the work force it a take many people’s jobs with things like self-checkouts and robots that assemble cars. However, technological advances increase our knowledge in medicine. This and save many lives in our quickly overcrowding, dying world. Again, this can be either a good or bad thing. So, honestly, I’m in the middle. I’m neither optimistic nor pessimistic towards our technological advances.

  23. 1. The information that surprised me most about technology was the amount of how much we text, and how little time is actually spent on talking to people without our voices or even face to face with another individual. For instance, when i had started the daily technology log, I had become aware of just how much I use texting instead of either calling a person or even finding alternative ways to interact face to face, or with a voice. My amount I texted would range from the 100's, where areas my time time on the phone altogether for an entire day would barely be a 1 minute long somedays. My hours on the internet had also been very high, along with how much time I spent on video game. There had been a day where I had spent up to 7 hours playing my PS3, and only realized just how long I was playing for when I had to answer to the technology log. Since starting the log I have tried to cut down on my use of technology and tried to focus upon other things such as going out to enjoy the fresh air, drawing, running, etc.

    2. Technology has managed to change my life in both good and bad ways. It has made it easier for my to communicate with my peers and also do research for school of just even news. On the flip side, it also serves as a huge distraction from what I really should be doing at the time, whether that be homework, studying, sleeping or merely just giving myself a rester. In my opinion, I think that technology does in fact have its toll upon sleeping schedules. Instead of laying in bed trying to sleep, an individual will look through their social media, maybe even watch a youtube video or two, text their friends till they can no longer keep theirs eyes open, all these factors influence just how much sleep you get. Now of course this doesn't mean that all people do this, but majority. Technology has also made it easier for you to connect with family or people from all around the world. Personally, I am optimistic about technology and believe that although there might be bad side effects, there also does come the good. There are many ways for you to stay informed about news and also, if ever in doubt about anything, just search up a youtube tutorial upon it and surely enough, there will be something there.

    3. I think that technology is changing our lives in significant ways. Whether it be from getting ahold of information faster and easier, staying connected, etc. Slowly, I believe that the world is beginning to reply too much upon technology and are being less and less independent upon themselves to do the work. For example, spell check, or even a search bar that allows you to search anything and have information at the tip of your fingertips without so much as getting out of your chair. Some schools are even contemplating the idea of having tablets given out to students instead of textbooks, to "save paper." Future penmanship is also at risk for almost everything nowadays is asked to be typed out in order to be handed in. Should we not encourage students to pick up a pencil instead? Technology allows someone to be a totally different person, giving them the option to choose what they look like, and just who they are as a whole. This, I think, gives the individual a false sense of whats real and whats fake within the virtual world.

  25. 4. My attitude towards technology would have to be more of both a optimistic and pessimistic one. I know that there are faults, but at the same time, I understand the need of technology. There are even jobs that are solely dependent upon the technology such as youtube video bloggers, actors, etc. I think that it all comes to how responsible we are with our use of technology. If it is being used for things such as bullying, that is where it takes a negative turn. For cyber bullying doesn't just stay at school or at a certain place, where you're safe once you get home, it follows you everywhere. Although technology is pretty helpful, there's also that "dark side" to it. To me, technology can be necessary but to a certain extent of how much, and how little.

  26. 1. One piece of information about technology that surprised me is about the America’s Army game. We learned that America's Army is a video game that the US government has spent about $32.8 million on. Apparently the game is set up in malls for people to play for free for hours. The game simulates situations that would happen when in battle and has information about real soldiers and their achievements. This educates players and maybe gives them a more positive view on joining the army. They have a soldier monitoring them playing who checks players' stats and based on how well they are playing, they offer them a chance to join the real army. What surprised me the most was that America's Army is their most successful way to recruit people onto the army. How well someone can play video games doesn't reflect real life abilities. For example, someone could be really good at sports video games but actually be terrible at playing sports in real life. I'm surprised with how many people would be willing to join army considering how being in the army puts your life in risk versus a virtual army where you can simply click the reset button when you die. Signing up for the army is like signing your life away.

    2. . Technology impacts many areas of my life. I learned how to use the computer when I was 3 and played video games as far as I could remember. When it comes to relationships and socializing I heavily interact through technology. In fact, my best friend and I are best friends because of video games. It wasn't like this before but he and my other close friends live long distances now so we can’t just casually meet up and hang out so we resort to spending hours chatting online or playing video games. Same goes for me and my boyfriend. However, our situation is a little different. Our houses are connected by a single 20 minute bus ride but we need to keep our relationship a secret. We rarely spend time together in real life so we end up talking online a lot. When it comes to family relationships, I have relatives in the Philippines so having the internet is really nice to have to stay connected. Something that we discussed in class is privacy and that people post many personal things for the public to read without really realizing the consequences. I never post personal things online so that’s not a problem for me. For example, I don’t post anything on my Facebook. I only use it to add people and be informed on anything that’s happening in school such as the grad events. How technology negatively impacts on my life is that it has diminished my attention span. When I try to study I get bored and distracted easily. I have problems staying engaged into my work because my brain doesn’t find it interesting. One final thing, I've developed a habit where I type “lol” or “wat” (I use wat as a joke, not out of laziness) or use emoticons such as c: naturally so throughout this entire paragraph I had to resist the urge to use emoticons. When it comes to spelling though, technology has vastly improved that. What is this auto-correct everyone talks about? I've never experienced it. I need to manually correct my words. Sure, there are the occasion red squiggles beneath a word where you can right click to fix it, but hey, at least I know how to spell the word now.

  27. 3. The way technology is changing the world impacts our daily lives. When you want to look up information you don’t necessarily need to go to the library and sign out a book. You can use Google to search the information. On the internet people can freely write things for the public to read. Speaking of the library, I think less people will start buying or borrowing books because you can buy e-books that you can read on a tablet or an e-reader and if you have a computer you could legally (or illegally) download PDF files of books. Secondly, when you go to the grocery store, there's a self-checkout section where you can check out your items by yourself without the need of a cashier. Although, a negative side I see about this is that it demolishes the amount of jobs available. Instead of having ten cash registers with a cashier standing behind each one, it has shrunken down to needing only one person to watch over the ten self-checkout stations who will come to aid you if you can't figure out why the confounding machine won't accept your credit card. Currently in this time we still have the traditional cahiers with their smiling faces and rolling conveyor belts but it's only a matter of time before they're replaced by a hunk of metal. That's just one example of technology reducing jobs. Soon we won't need pharmacists because there'll be online pharmacies so by the time I get a degree in science in pharmacy I'd have tough time getting a job. Despite this, technology helps with jobs too. You can email your resume and/or job application when you apply for jobs now. My mother works as an inbound distribution manager and this heavily relies on technology, for easily communicating to distribution centers in other part of North America and writing spread sheets for recording information, etc. For artists, the internet is a good way for them to get noticed. They can freely display their work to the public where they can easily see people can freely comment and critique on their work which does help the artist.

    4. I personally have an optimistic perspective on technology. Basically, technology is supposed to make our lives easier. Technology heats up our homes, technology brings us closer to finding cures to diseases, we can create and learn. It's another form to express ourselves like we're doing right now with this unit final response. It allows us to do thing we weren't able to do before: connect to people on the other side of the world, we can fly (via airplanes of course,) some who didn't have the ability to hear could. A negative I'd say is pollution from manufacturing factories and energy consumption by the average person, but I believe as technology advances, they'll develop technology that will reduce energy consumption and produce less pollution. On an individual level, I think it's our own personal choices that causes us to become lazy. I mean, is it really the TV's fault that you decided to go on a 10 hour marathon of your favourite series? Did the computer physically grab your arm to stop you from finishing your homework to tell you your virtual garden is dying? The computer didn't tell you that, it's not alive. It was the person behind the computer that told you to play their game more so they could maybe squeeze a little more money from you. That's how the business industry works and it happens in real life too, but I'm going off topic now... It's our own misuse and abuse of technology that creates what most would say are bad. Besides, it's just another think I can enjoy and love.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 1) The information about technology that surprised me the most was how often we use on a daily bases. I found it a bit frightening that the average person spends at least 11 hours a day in front of a screen. That is almost half your day which most likely you are wasting and not using your time wisely. Many of us could be getting out more often if technology wasn't constantly getting in our way. It's shocking how technology can be as addictive as using drugs. All the new advancements are slowly becoming more and more a part of our lives and over powering our ability to do things ourselves the hard way and with effort. The US Army are recruiting people based on the way they score on video games which are also being sold to kids everywhere and were originally used to prepare the army. Many people have second virtual lives that they create how ever they want. People get so caught up in this virtual world that they tend to forget or ignore the real issues they face in reality. We should be using technology much less and when we do decide to use it, it should benefit us in a healthy way.

    2) Technology has impacted me in both positive and negative ways.
For instance I rely on math videos to get me through tough problems in math. They show you in a more clear way to understand the question. Technology is a great tool to research many different things. You can search your health issues online so you don't need to go to the doctor's office. In fact there are many ways to reach your doctor without having to go to them. You could call them, email them ect. Technology has made it easier for us to catch up with old friends and always be in touch with others. The negative ways technology has impacted my life is by distracting me from doing what is truly important. Because of all the many things technology has to offer you can be up all night. This affects your sleeping patterns. One day you'll be up until one o'clock and the next day you'll be in bed by ten. This confuses your brain so your body doesn't properly get the rest it needs. This will lead to a chain reaction where you're always tired so your critical thinking is weak so than you might make the wrong decisions, you get more anxiety and on it goes. I feel that if we didn't have so much technology around us 24/7 we would be able to get more sleep, be able to focus more and have more energy to spare.

    3) I think technology is changing our future by being so advanced and powerful that a person's abilities aren't valued and considered as much as it use to be many years back. Since we have so much access to technology at any given time we can easily use it to do our work for us. This makes us lazy and dependable on it. Many students aren't taking joy in learning on their own because it takes too much time so instead they use their computers to do all the research for them in half the time but this strategy isn't very helpful because you aren't using you brain. You will not understand the assignment as well if you didn't do it completely on your own. Because of how powerful technology is, it's taking our chances for employment and replacing us. Many people don't know how to connect to others by face because they're so used to hiding behind a screen to communicate.

    4) I feel that i'm more onto the pessimistic side of technology just because of how its controlling our daily lives and distracting us from what we should be really focusing on. Technology is decreasing our critical thinking skills because it does all the work for us so we barely need to do anything. I'm not saying we should ban it but instead use it much less by cutting those 11 hours of screen time, to just 3 hours. If we use technology we should use it to make us better and stronger individuals instead of lazy unreliable ones!

  29. Regardless of the many wonders of technology, these advancements have my feelings fluctuating. What information surprised me the most about our technology unit, was learning that the average person from the Renaissance could be equivalent to Albert Einstein today. It surprises me a great deal, even angers and disappoints me to see what society has come to. In the times of the Renaissance, new ideas and technologies were only beginning to arise. Although not all technology is bad, what seems to be taking over our lives are the portable devices that we can't bare to part from. We have given ourselves a characteristic of laziness, Years ago, before the TV remote, people used to get up to change the channel. Before cellphones, people would go outside to speak with one another. At times we use our phones to call people who are even in the same house. Now that we've all past those decades, as individuals and a community we should be far from where we stand present day.

When I was younger, and first started using computers, I was very much consumed by playing online and offline games.I was not so much addicted, as much as I had nothing much to do with my time. When I got my first cellphone, I was not very into using it because there was not much to do with a Samsung flip phone. Now that I have a smart phone, I could say I'm pretty close to addicted to gaming. Having a phone that is it's own computer has me unbalancing my personal time. Having access to networks and the internet has not taken away time from my family or friends, but time I need for myself. I don't necessarily think technology has taken over my life, though I normally, rarely have time for myself to begin with for recreational purposes. I think cellphones and social networks, anything that sends text messages, takes away from our communication development. In similar ways, it is much like placing a baby in front of a TV and expecting him/her to learn how to speak without ever speaking.

I think a lot of technology is giving our younger generations more opportunities, and the older generations less. I also think that technology is dumbing down the younger generations. The internet, cellphones, smart phones, give everyone a great deal of access to anything and almost everything in the world, things that not everyone should have access to. Technology is a delivery service of promotion and advertisement and sometimes harsh portrayal of how the world is thought to be, but not necessarily what it is. In the workplace, technology sometimes has people bolted to a desk in a cubicle for numerous hours, which takes away from the active lifestyle of a person. Though technology in health care, such as the realization of diseases and sicknesses, that is not what most of the people, who are able to afford devices are hooked on. I believe cellphones, social networks, take away the activity time our brain needs to strive in life.

After this unit, I am now more of a pessimist towards technology. Any machine, device, anything technological, that can make a persons life better in the essential type area, is a good form of technology. What makes us put less effort into communicating with one another, and not learning all we can by going out to a library, may not be such a great form of technology. Personally, I'd give anything to have a mind like Einstein, Da Vinci, Gandhi or any person with a great brain,. It's just a trembling feeling to have, to think that without much of the technologies of today, we all could have been geniuses, made an enormous impact on the world, and dug out of many landslides (figuratively speaking) , not just communities, but maybe the world?

  30. 1) What information about technology surprised you the most? The information that surprises me the most is the face that kids spend so much time on the computer, that there is camps set up to help addiction. The information that I had learned, is the camps are held in Korea, and the ages with the camp start as young as nine years of age. This information shocked me, upset me, and made me compare it to my duration and involvement on the computer. Korean camps held to help addiction incorporated the children performing task out of the technological world. Almost instantly, I was shocked to realize that some of these children in the camps cannot perform everyday physical task. In some ways this made me think, how has technology changed my life?

    2) I started performing task on the computer at a young age, held at my grandmother’s place. These activities I did on the computer were primarily learning orientated. These learning activities made my reading comprehension skills better, able to type better, and even write more advanced. I never thought of using the computer for television, video-games, or even just to waste time. My brother and I were introduced to computers as educational builders. As I aged, I soon realized computers had many purposes than just learning and reading. Soon enough me and my brother, while getting older, started purchasing video-games and watching TV shows on the computer. Sadly enough, the video games and television shows we were participating in, did not give us any educational benefit. As a young child, I did not know that nor would I have cared. It was all about being happy, having fun, and figuring what else could we do on the computer? Going into high school, I finally realized the computer/internet could change and benefit my life dramatically. Using Wikipedia for projects on famous historians, Google Translate for second language, and reading in general to help me pre-occupy my time. Overall, as a user of the computer/internet my life has changed in good ways, to be more aware of current events and news. However, to much usage has had a negative affect on me, though I am not sure if it does the same on the world?

    3) The technology we use in modern day is changing, getting upgraded, and even shortening our task faster than we can blink! I believe it has the capability to impact and/or change our lives positively and negatively. Some of the positives I see occurring with technology is the fact that it creates faster solutions to possible problems people may be faced with. A clear example of this could be a GPS device, held inside your cellular device. This device cuts down the time having to find a map, state your coordinates, and eventually find your destination. However, when these handy and convenient cellular devices cause problems. The problems that occur with these cellular devices are the social skills, using one virtually your whole day. I believe the excessive use of these devices brings problems with people having actual face to face interactions. They may be good at texting, though when it comes to physical interactions this is where many people’s problems begin. With my views on technology, I have optimistic views, I believe technology will guide us to a world of success

    4) I believe our technology we have now, and more to come, will lead to a future of optimistic behavior. The reasoning I feel positive about technology now, and it in the future, is because we are able to find more efficient and better calculated advances in medical. The ways scientist is capable of finding, helping, and hopefully curing illnesses is astonishing. I have a friend who is a victim of neurological illness, so far no cure. A scientist had told me at UBC, in regards to my friend’s illness, that “If we did not have these advances in technology, this would not be possible”. His quote represented the success on stopping the progression of the disease. To conclude, my views on technology may change, but for now I believe it is helping our world in tremendous ways.

  31. 1) There are many things that have surprised me about technology. The two main things that have surprised and shocked me the most was that there are virtual games people play as if their avatars were them, and another thing that has surprised me was that there are internet addiction camps for kids. I was surprised that people play this virtual game called “Second Life.” “Second Life” is a video game people pay subscription to play. You create an avatar based on how you look and instead of chasing their own dreams; game players make their avatars chase their dreams. Weird right? Yes. In order to play this game you have to have a 45-90 thousand dollar salary a year. This has surprised me because I always thought games were to be cheap to play for and not do things what you would normally do. I believe people should go chase their own dreams rather than worrying about their avatars that are not even real. Last but not least, what has surprised me was that there are Internet addiction camps for kids who are addicted to using the Internet all day long. South Korea and China have these camps that I have heard of. The Chinese Internet information Centre reports that there are over 300 million people who play online video games. 24 million people are addicted to the internet. These camps are basically a rehab for people who are addicted to the internet. This is surprising to me because I would have never thought there would be camps for people are addicted to using the internet.

    2) Technology has changed my life a lot for a lot of reasons. However the three main reasons why technology has changed my life are, phones have changed my sleeping pattern, made me focus less at work, and last but not least technology has mad my spelling deteriorated. Having a phone has ruined my sleeping pattern. I use to get 8-9 hours of sleep easy on a school night. But since I have a phone I only sleep 5-6 hours a night. It is all because every night I would be on my phone browsing the Internet, talking on the phone or texting my friends. Second reason my I believe technology has changed my life is that now I focus less at work, and work a lot more slower than I did. When I first got the job I never use to check my phone while working. Because I never checked my phone I always got my job done faster. Now I have this horrible habit of checking my phone and replying to my texts at work, that my working speed has gotten slower, and caused me to focus less when I stack fruits and vegetables at work. Lastly but not least with computers and cell phones, I cannot spell anymore. Before writing a word down and seeing if it looks right, I rush to my phone or computer and use spellcheck. This is not good because what if I am writing a test and I don’t know how to spell, I would be doomed. Without using my phone all the time, I believe I can be a better person, and smarter. Getting work done, spelling properly and sleeping more would make me better person.

  32. 3) Technology is changing our future dramatically. The main two reasons are that, people will be losing their jobs and communication is going to be worse now between friends and family. Technology has advanced so much that people are not going to have to work anymore. Grocery stores like

Superstore, Safeway and Save on Foods now have self-checkouts where you pay for your items by yourself. This has laid off many cashiers from their jobs. Soon there would be enough technology where majority of the people would not need to work. Without jobs how are we suppose to pay our bills? Another way technology is changing our future Is that people are going to lack communications in person. People are going to lose communication in person because they are constantly texting their friends and family and saying things they would not normally say in real life. This will lead to silence when you meet people in person because you are use to texting. Also when you are with friends and family you are constantly checking your phones causing no conversations.

    4) I believe I am pessimist towards technology. I believe it has made me not as smart as I could have been. Before I would actually read books for information not I use my phones and just write down. Also before I would draw pictures due to my imagination, but now I have to Google a picture. I have a love hate relationship for technology, but mainly hate. It has made me a different person, a person I don like anymore. From now on I am going to use my cell phone and computers less.

  33. 1) The information about technology that I was most surprised to learn was of virtual games that imitate real life. For example, games like "America's Army", "Second Life", and more. I was surprised to find that millions of people, including the government, have invested money on games that are nothing more than a replica of real life experiences. In games like, "America's Army", consumers have been manipulated into thinking that earning a high score on a game mirrors their ability to perform successfully in actual combat. This is merely a ploy by the government to recruit youth. The success and popularity of virtual reality games changed my perspective on the power of technology.

    2) Technology has immensely affected my critical thinking abilities in both positive and negative aspects. With technology at my fingertips, I find myself turning to the likes of Google to instantly provide me answers rather than analyze things on my own and come up with answers. Skimming webpages has allowed me to only read selective information that I find interesting. It has diminished my exposure to information that would actually provoke me to critically think. However, having a plethora of information at hand that would normally be difficult to find, allows me to search and learn about a variety of topics, thus broadening my mind on issues I would not normally be exposed to. Consequently, technology has vastly affected my critical thinking abilities.

    3) Technology is inevitably changing the way we live our lives. It's impact can be seen in classrooms of all kinds, where technology is used as an effective method of teaching. For example, Powerpoints and Prezis have replaced chalkboards as a way to present information. Classroom discussions are being relocated to class websites, as well. Furthermore, students are finding ways to teach themselves through the usage of Google, Youtube and other resources. Moreover, communication has become effectively easier. People can instantly be reached simply by the click of a button. Although incredibly useful, it has diminished the amount of time individuals spend conversing in person. Relationships are being tested specifically because of this. The workforce has benefited from advancements in technology. Making methods of mass production faster and more efficient. Computers are prominent in almost all workplaces as a tool to organize, retrieve, and store information. The presence of technology will continue to dominate most aspects of our lives, perhaps even more in the near future.

    4) Although technology can negatively impact our lives if misused, it's advancements have been instrumental in allowing humanity to have a greater understanding of the world. For example, exploration in space would not be possible without developments in technology. Technology has provided the outlet between Earth and the seemingly infinite universe. It has allowed humans to create satellites, some of which improve the means of communication, research and navigation. It's also been crucial in the development of healthcare. Technology has provided new machines, treatments and medicine that has improved the lives of millions of patients. Our dependance on technology has made it a vital part of our everyday lives, it represents a curious and innovative society that is looking to improve their quality of life.

  34. 1.) In class we learned about a game called “Second Life” and “America’s Army” in which you can create an avatar and live a second life online. These avatars are able to buy a house, set a career for themselves, and even meet other avatars. This game helps its players to escape reality and enjoy the virtual world. They can own property, attend concerts, go to work and even form unions and have a virtual protest. Moreover, when you get tired of the game you can not only quit but also sell your avatar for money which is called “Gold mining”. Something that really had me puzzled was why someone would spend a great deal of time on a life that doesn’t exist in reality. It was shocking to acknowledge how much time people around the world spend on the computer. Likewise it was shameful to hear that there is a camp that deals with kids who are addicted to video games. Furthermore, the game “America’s Army” is a 3D shooter game developed by the US Army, originally as a training tool for real American soldiers. It is considered to be the most effective recruitment tool for the US military. The fact that the US have army stores in their malls, where they let the youth plays the game free of charge was odd. Also, how the army recruit youth on the spot made me feel a little bit surprised. It has me thinking that people are becoming so hypnotized by technology that while playing a game they easily sign themselves up for the army.

2.) Technology is making our lives so easy that we are beginning to slowly handicap ourselves. The simplest things that are a part of our everyday lives involve some sort of technology. Where is technology leading us? I begin to wonder that if technology spirals out of control that one day we too will end up like the characters on Wall-E. Technology has changed everyone’s lives greatly. As an individual I don’t feel that technology has changed me as a person, however it has changed my lifestyle. I find myself completely trusting Google and anything that it tells me. Also, I check Facebook at least five times a day to see if I missed anything important. Furthermore, I feel that it’s tougher to communicate with people in person being that I am so used to looking at a screen and not at a person. School projects, which I was accustomed to spending so much time putting in detail by hand, I can now simply do on my computer. Social networking sites have become a large part of our lives. I become concerned and nervous if I don’t check my email. I’ve notice that when I am having a conversation with someone but don’t get a chance to finish the conversation I’ll usually end up saying, “I’ll message you”. Overall, technology has played a significant role in my daily life.

  35. 3.) Technology has an enormous impact on people’s intimacy as well. ‘Chatting’ or ‘texting’ makes it so much easier to say something intimate or important to another person, than it would be face to face. Technology can be referred to the social life of today’s generation. Instead of hanging out with a group of friends, we would rather spend time having conversations online or playing virtual video games.

4.) In conclusion, I think that technology is a great benefit in our society but to a limit. Although, it’s turning us into lazy and incompetent civilians.

    1. It is evident that computer games can be a fun activity to do in your spare time. But what happens when these games become much more than just games? This is the problem we are facing in today's society when some of the most advanced technology has ever seen is right under your fingertips. For some, this newfound interest has taken over their lives to the point where the border between reality and technology becomes blurred. This has been what has surprised me the most about technology. With games such as Second Life and America’s Army, you can create any identity for yourself, with basically no limitations. Although some may see this as appealing and a relaxing past time activity, the 32.8$ billion in tax payer’s dollars that has gone towards America’s Army in the past ten years has become much more than leisure time. In the virtual game known as Second Life, players customize their own avatars and spend money to improve the lives of these dreamt up avatars such as purchasing more land, clothing and role-play items. This is achieved through trading US$ or other currencies to purchase Linden Dollars which is used to purchase items in the game. As a result of these overwhelmingly realistic abilities that Second Life provides, many players chose to invest more time, effort and money in their “online” lives than their real ones. Such addictions can be due to a longing for escape from an event or problem in their real lives, which they resort to their “perfect” lives in these games to compensate. It makes us wonder, what are people running from? Are we helping or hurting them by providing these false lives as an escape?

    2. Throughout my life, I have realized how fortunate I was to grow up as a child in a time where technology was not as advanced as it is in present society. I feel this way because I remember my childhood as playing outside in the sun and having tea parties with friends. On the other hand, I vaguely remember the occasional computer game. Currently, there is immense lack of childhood experiences like what my generation has grown up with. We were fortunate enough to see the rise of more advanced cell phones and computers, but we were also old enough that we did not have to rely on them by the time we were 12 years old. I believe this dependence is what is happening today. It saddens me to see the level of attachment that lies within youth in today’s society, but it also shocks me to notice some addiction in myself at times. Fortunately, I know that I can easily survive without a phone because I did not grow up reliant on technology. Aside from childhood experiences, I have see firsthand how technology and the use of social media can damage friendships and cause unwanted drama. A simple comment that may have been intended to remain in confidence can now be shared for hundreds to see. This can lead to arguments, rumors and a lot of unnecessary drama than if it were shared in confidence like in the past. Technology has impacted my life immensely in the past and will affect me as long as it continues to advance and become even more predominant in society.

    3. Over the past few years, I have noticed a diverse change in the way society operates due to the increasing advances of technology. The ways in which work is changing leaves me apprehensive about what jobs will be open for me in the future and which ones will be primarily self-operated. We are seeing a large increase in the jobs that were once human operated and are now generally machine and technology operated. Such jobs are cashiers, stock workers and bankers. These jobs have all been introduced with machines that allow you to complete the job by yourself with the help of technology. A job that once required the assistance of a paid worker is now taken over. This leaves people out of work and personally, causes me to have concerns about how many jobs will be available to me if this continues. As well, technology is changing the way we form and maintain relationships. I believe that there are positive and negative attributes to this. For instance, international relationships that were once nearly impossible are not easily accesable to the public and can create long lasting success stories. In addition to romantic relationships, friendship connections can also be created online which I believe is a great way to connect with new and interesting people as well as those who may live far away from you. On the contrary, I believe that the way we maintain relationships through technology often hinders our communication and expression skills. For instance, what one may be easily able to say through a text or on the computer, may seem impossible to say in person. This is detrimental to society because I don’t believe that people had a lack of skills such as these like they do now. Overall, I think that technology is changing our future for the better but also for the worse.

    4. My opinion towards technology is conflicted. I believe that there have definitely been many positive outcomes and advances but I also think technology may be hurting us in the process. For instance, there has been much success in improving the lives of those in under-developed countries such as the organization Kiva which allows you to support entreprenurs by donating money but also receiving it back. This is a great benefit to those who without technology, would not have these opportunities. On the other hand, I believe that technology is corrupting our youth and causing them to become dependent on materialistic items and beliefs. I feel that technology is cause children to grow up too fast and to not enjoy the natural beauties of life such as nature and the people around you. As someone growing up in the times of technological advances, I have both a pessimistic view and an optimistic view but I think it is also dependant on whether it is used for the good of society or not.

  38. 1) The information that surprised me the most about technology was the existence of virtual worlds such as "Second Life". Second Life is a game where players create their own characters and live out their virtual lives. They eat, sleep, work and play much like we do. Players invest enormous amounts of time and money into advancing these inanimate characters. The knowledge of this game's existence baffled me. Why would someone take the time and effort to live out a false life? What's the point? Why not do something more productive? Perhaps engaging in these kinds of games serves as a form of release for some people. One can forget about their own life and hardships and focus on building up a more glorified version of themselves. Still, doing so seems counterproductive. People should work on improving themselves, rather than spending time, energy and money on a fake existence.

    2) I have trouble falling and remaining asleep; I believe this is due to technology's adverse effects. My anxiety can be heightened through means of social media. This can cause me to experience insomnia. Upon waking in the middle of the night, I impulsively check my cellular phone for activity (which is located on my nightstand, since it is charging). If it indicates that I have a missed call from somebody unexpected, it can cause me to worry; or if I happen to see an unpleasant text message, I can become extremely upset. Either of these reactions can hinder my ability to get a good night's sleep.

    3) One benefit of technology's advancement is the ability to communicate effectively to those physically far away. Years ago, if one wanted to converse with somebody in another country, they would have to write a letter and send it through courier. The process took a long time and was inefficient if an immediate response was necessary. The invention of the telephone was revolutionary; however, if one was out (and not near a land line) they could not be contacted. Nowadays, with the accessibility of cellular phones and computers, we are able to communicate like never before. We are able to experience a closeness and connection with friends and family not within our proximity. With the help of social medias such as email and Facebook, we can send and receive pictures we might have never otherwise seen. These can include important, life changing events such as births, weddings and graduations. Technology is changing our future in the way of making us more globally connected.

    4) My perspective towards technology is more optimistic, rather than pessimistic. I do realize that technology can be misused and the consequences can be detrimental. However, the benefits are far greater. We are now able to connect on a global level, respond to emergencies quicker and raise world wide awareness about important issues. These are luxuries that had not been granted (as completely) prior to the advancement of technology. Its abuse is mostly due to lack of education and personal choices. With proper use, technology is a great concept.

  39. 1.I was surprised to learn that the average kids spend 11.5 hours per day multitasking in front of a screen. But what have surprised me the most were the camps in South Korea – a rehab camp for people especially of young age who are addicted to internet. Moreover, people have health issues due to this addiction. On the other side infobesity was very surprising we are fed the information in which we are interested in which is making our world limited. We never get chance to explore the world thoroughly. Lastly, it was like a thunderstorm to learn that the game “American’s Army”- a shooter game by the US army which is truly originated for American army as a training tool. In addition, the US government spent nearly about $32.8 million on this game. Moreover, US have PlayStation set up in malls to encourage especially youth to play the game free of cost. They have real officers watching them play to recruiting the youth on how well they play in the game. Then the real officers encourage them to join the real army. I always thought technology is our backbone but I never knew it has its own other side. After learning about the other side of technology rather than the side which is making our lives easier so many questions were bolting into my mind.

    2. Technology plays a tremendous role in most of our lives and I am one of them. Since the say I am introduced to my friend Google I no longer seek help from others. Whenever I need help I look up to Google instead of flipping paper through the textbook looking for answer. I find it way easier to get my answer a click away from Google. My mind is set to a point where laziness plays a big role. Talking about sleep technology took over it. It has totally changed my sleeping schedule. It’s not a matter of lying in bed trying to sleep; instead I look up for my friend’s text messages, Facebook, instagram where I choose to spend my sleep time watching movies but when it’s time to begin a new day again laziness play its role. Technology on the other side helped me a lot to connect with my loved one I can contact them; I can see them any time I want. It’s just so much easier to communicate nowadays rather than writing letters and waiting for their letter back. More significantly, It helped to gain knowledge and to learn what I don’t know by just searching it up on YouTube. Technology has affected me both in good and bad ways. I am not sure that will using technology will be a good idea or without technology for everything we do.

    3. Technology is advancing day by day what we can’t even imagine it exists. For example Technology is bringing families together through the process of learning. No longer do the young learn from the old. Four-year old know more about the functions and features of a mobile phone than their parents, and are teaching them how to use those beyond-basic features. Technology will change our experience of education. No longer will education be the privilege of those who can afford it. We will learn more things from more people and sources; learning curves will be shortened and deepened. The knowledge will become currency that can be valued and traded, people would seek ways of doing new things in more advance way. Furthermore, Technology is affecting our learning and will affect our future for instance when we are sitting at home with our families we intend to be texting on our phones, watching. While shopping and even when we are walking in busy streets we are texting. During the class when teacher is giving lecture where we need to be listening to her and learning new things. It’s affecting our future, our studies, our learning. Even though, there are thousands, hundreds of friends on our Facebook how many are you sure about that they will be with you in your bad times? Relationships are blurred by the screen in front of us. We are in the era where we are dependent on our technology to communicate. Can you imagine going a whole week without checking your Facebook?. It’s kind of impossible to communicate with other without using technology today. Technology can be good — it provides us with faster and more efficient ways to communicate with others, but it is also harming our ability to communicate with people face-to-face, and sometimes, it impacts our ability to write properly. It’s affecting our ability to express our ideas clearly. By using abbreviations and slang in texts, it is hard to remember to use proper grammar when writing formal papers. Technology also harms our communication in school. Think of how many teachers have probably received a "cuz," "l8ter" or "cya" in an emails. Moreover, technology damages our relationships. When we spend too much time on our computers and phones, we lose real connection with others.

    4. My perspective towards technology is an optimist. The advancements and improvements that technology has made in our lives and presents views that support new or existing technological innovations. For instance, advanced medicines and treatments have saved and improved lives. Computers and the internet have improved efficiency in communication and research and made it accessible easier. We can see how so many of the funds have been sent, through text messaging just by a click away. For example before the internet and computers came it was harder for us to find information but now we have technology available to us. Technology plays a huge role in communicating with one another. For example, the benefits of technology can be recognized within the medical field. New and old technological innovations have allowed us within the medical field to learn more about diseases and problems relating to healthcare. On the other hand, it’s affecting people to form meaningful and long lasting relationships. Like on Facebook, one can create a persona for themselves that is totally opposite of how they act in real life. When using technology, it is hard to judge a person’s character.
We all know that everything is not perfect, same with technology there are certainly flaws. We’ve become so embedded into our technological lifestyles that I don’t think it is possible for us to better our way of life and lower the detrimental consequences without including technology in the solution.

  41. 1) The information about technology that surprised me the most was how often individuals use technology on a daily bases. I found it a bit scary and unbelievable that the average person spends at least 11 hours a day in front of a screen. Nonetheless, 90% of people in Korea use the internet and 10-15% are at risk. Moreover, South Korea is one of the first countries for internet psychology. Kids small as 10-years-old are put into rehab to get rid of their internet addiction and more involved in outdoor games.

2.) Technology plays an tremendous role in my daily life. It has changed my life in both a positive and negative way. To begin with, I am very dependent on technology. I use technology to do many of my daily functions such has study, entertain, socialize, and many more. Every since i have been using technology studying has gotten both easier and faster. I no longer have to rely on others to help my finish my homework or help me study. Instead, i just go to Google and search up the answer, which is also much easier than flipping through pages. In contrast, ever since i have been introduced to technology the amount of sleep i get has decreased enormously. Instead of sleeping I would rather be on Facebook, twitter or even texting. Not only that, but the first and last thing i do is check my phone.

    (3) Technology is changing our future enormously in many ways. First of all, technology is used as an necessary learning and teaching tools. Not do we only use technology to learn as students but we also use it to teach. For example, technology such has power point is used in many work forms such has teaching and business presentations. Furthermore, technology has changed the way we communicate with one another. Ever since technology has been introduced, face-to-face interaction as decreased enormously. Instead of writing letters or communicating face to face, we now prefer to text or call one another. Though technology helps us stay connected to friends and family, it also invades our privacy and makes one an easy target. For example, it is now so much easier to find out information about one another, or even bully people online by saying things you would probably never say if you were face to face with the person.

    (4) My perspective towards technology is more pessimist because i believe that technology is effecting our lives more negatively than it is in a positive way. Although technology makes our life much easier, it does make one less capable of doing its on work. We become so dependable on technology that we believe it is nearly impossible to live without it.

  42. 1) Another way the americans recruit canidates for the army is through a game, "American Army", thats one of the few things that surprised me because if you were just a regular person that happened to be bored and went in to play the game, and next thing you know you're being asked if you'd want to join the army because you had "special skills" when in reality playing a game its totslly different from being out in the field and risking your life. In a game you have many lives, but in reality you only have one, you dont have a restart button to try again. Another interesting fact that surprised me was that the youth nowadays spend 11.5 hours/day infront of a screen! That's almost half your day wasted infront of a device that affects your eyes. Many people would deny that, but throughout the day it all adds up. The last fact that surprised me was that there's a rehab camp for youth in South Korea for young adults even kids that are addicted to the internet. You wouldn't expect anyone to be addicted to the internet, although most likely they are addicted because of games such as "World of Warcraft"and other games you can play online.

    2) One major way that technology has changed my life is it drastically affects my sleeping cycle. I use my phone as an alarm clock, it has my whole social life, and it's a main way to communicate with people, although there are many positives to that, it also has many negatives. Just before going to bed I usually check all my notifications, what is suppose to be a 5 minute skim to reply to all messages turns into 2 hours, it is way to easy to get sidetracked. I cannot fall asleep unless I have my phone under my pillow. It would seem to be an exaggeration to say that my life depends on my phone, but it entirely kind of does.

    3) It changes our future in many ways, now you need to be able to operate a technical device/machine. You need to be able to keep up with the versatile update in technology. It gives us more access to the world, and keeps s connected to current events. It broadens our knowledge of the world and everything that goes on within it. It could work well with relationships, or not so great. It depends on who it is. But with the invention of all these easy accessible devices, we well eventually forget about books, and learn from portable technology. Although that appeals to many parents for their children, they have to understand that kids start using these devices at a younger age, and that isn't always a good thing. The younger they start to use technology, the more they will rely on it. The child obesity rate in Canada has sky-rocketed drastically in the last decade, and one main factor is game consols, which they start to use at a younger age. As this happens, childrens imagination, and creativity will eventually diminish.

    4) Although technology is good for our modern world, and is changing many things, In my opinion the cons outweigh the pros. Yes there are many advancements and achievements made with technology, but if something were to go wrong in process of what was accomplished, imagine the impact humanity, our world would have to take. Also alot of money goes into making these mechanical instruments which could have been used for something more beneficial. Having all these machines doing the work for us makes us humans lazy, and at somepoint in the future we may not need to lay a finger, or get up to get something. Children won't know what hopscotch, double dutch,or California kickball is anymore. It effects our health, mentality, and emotional stability because we will at somepoint, even now, rely to heavily on these technologies.

  43. 1. I was surprised to know how technology is impacting our lives. I was very shocked when I learned about the game “Second Life” where you can plan your whole life in any way you want- a virtual reality game. It was strange to know that the players uses the game as much as a real life. Even though, it’s affecting the nature the component machines end up in the electronic waste dumps in Nigeria and India. On the other hand, in the “American’s Army” it was so surprising that US government spent $32.8 billion on just this game which was in reality a tool for American army for training purposes. They even have gaming stores in US malls for youth to play the game for free so they can watch the good player and involve them in American army in the future. Both games are the high energy consumption. I learned lot new and shocking things about technology which were very surprising.

2.2. Technology changed my life in both good and bad ways. It plays a huge role to connect me with loved ones in the other countries. I can stay connected with them at any time and anywhere. It’s a big helping hand when I need to find information. I stay tuned about what’s happening in outside of the world through Facebook, twitter and many more. On the side, it had affected my grammar, spelling and a bad habit of using abbreviation and slang which affects me in school when writing formal pieces. Technology also affected and lessens my physical activities instead of doing physical activities playing outside in the courtyard I choose to spend my time on internet on social networking sites, instagram, twitter and watching movies. Technology made us dependent on them that we became so lazy to do anything on our own.

  44. 3. Technology is changing our learning style a lot. Where we used to use books to study and to find our solutions to questions instead now we use I pads, eBook’s, Google to find our solution. Whenever we need help with our school homework we look up for Google instead of a physical help.
Technology is affecting and changing our relationships with family, friends and relatives. We spent a lot of time on technology instead of giving the time to family and enjoy with them. Whenever we go out for family dinners most of us are on our own cell phone social networking. On the other hand, we are not able to express our feeling and thoughts which are making our relations limited to some extent.
Technology is a very huge helping hand in communication. We can connect and stay touch with anyone, anywhere at any time. Instead of writing letters like in old days now we can just text, call, email, video calls and many other ways to stay in touch.

    4. I fell more into the optimist category. Yes, technology has both sides to it good and bad. Technology is helping and advancing day by day. Today it’s easier to cure disease nowadays then back then more lives can be saved now with the cure of advanced medicines and technology. It saves us time and we stay in touch with the whole world but even travelling it. We can get to know any information and knowledge and learn anything without leaving our house. On the other side, it’s affecting our sleeping cycles, physical activities and our health. It has bad effects on us too but we have more advantages from technology that why we are ignoring its bad side.

  45. 1. The information that surprised me the most is the fact that people play “Second Life”. It’s weird enough that people would want to live a second life with all the things they can’t have in real life. Especially considering the fact that you have to pay money in order to play the game. Also there must be certain expectations in order to play as well. Such as owning a computer, having certain amount of play time, and lastly owning household income ranging from $45,000-$90,000.
    2. Technology has greatly impacted my life in many negative ways. Such as losing sleep, because I would be busy on social media sites. I would constantly wonder what was happening thus spending hours on these sites. I would constantly refresh until I see something interesting, which is usually a link to watch something. Thus leading me to something else to watch and by the time I know it its 2am and I know I won’t be able to get up for school the same day. Also I’ve been so dependent on all the gadgets I own. If I lost all my gadgets one day I would probably have anxiety attacks and I would feel as if I might die. On another note the world just in general is going down the wrong path. For instance say in December there was a power outage for an entire month many people would die, because they have no knowledge of basic survival skills. Although that is just a “what if”. In my opinion we as human beings are just too into our own worlds in our devices and gadgets to just put them down or a second and just see the world for its true beauty and pleasure.
    3. I believe technology is changing our future in many drastic ways. Such as work, learning, and relationships. Firstly for work wise you are never really off work, because co-workers can contact you off devices after work. So technically you are constantly working and never off. Learning wise I think everyone is getting dumber, mainly because spell check makes things so much easier for you. Lastly for relationship wise people now days can poor their hearts out over text and messaging, but they can’t say stuff in person to their loved ones.
    4. I’m kind of for it and against it at the same time. Surely it makes life a whole lot easier. Such as searching things up, everything is there with a tap of a couple of buttons. This saves time which now days is very valuable to most. Also considering we are so used to doing this and have been for so long. Not doing so would just sound so far fetched to most. We as human beings are becoming lazier and lazier as the days go on. There for I’m an optimist and I do appreciate technology, because it just makes life easier. Never the less considering there is social media and all these other sites such as YouTube it’s kind of impossible for you to get bored. Lastly on just the internet alone there is a vast amount of information one can obtain for a lifetime.

  46. 1) The information about technology that surprised me the most was that, many children ages 10 and older spend up to 3-5 hours daily playing video games. Video games such as "Call Of Duty" and "Grand theft Auto" are highly addictive and expose the younger generations to contents better suited for an older audience. Moreover the contents they see daily are drilled into their brains and cause these kids to misbehave. Like in Thailand around 5 years ago when a teen stabbed a taxi driver and plead that "he was acting out a scene from Grand Theft Auto". Violence in video games disrupts the learning of children, and the evils technology nowadays is starting to show as it progresses in more realistic games.

    2) Technology has helped change my life in both a good way and bad way. For one technology has helped me get from place to place. The "GPS tracking system app" installed in my phone allows me to never get lost. However technology being so advanced, it allows me to stay up to date with everything in the world. The downside of this is that apps like "Twitter" and "Facebook" show me what everyone is doing, and i can't seem to control myself from constantly checking my notifications. Spending countless hours on my phone at night when i should be asleep, takes its toll on my sleeping cycle.

    3) Technology today helps change business owners to market their products. On networks like "craigslist", other than the boring old way in newspapers and flyers. This allows information to be spread rapidly and costs for marketing is minimal too none. Business owners can also check and receive their emails much quicker and become more efficient when they are given new tasks. However technology has its negative effects on relationships, more and more people are texting their friends other than calling them, resulting in poor communication skills. In the long run people will not have the proper skills to communicate for future job interviews.

4)I am more of a pessimist because technology is becoming so advanced that our smart phones are becoming smarter than us. The luxury of having a device that allows us to have easy access to a calculator, GPS, internet etc, doesn't help us think critically on a regular basis. Having "Google search" can be helpful but when we start to rely on it for even the smallest of tasks then we begin to forget certain things like spelling. People use sites like "Facebook" to make new friends in the cyber world, but can't communicate in person to new people. Technology is beginning to take over our lives and only you can control if you are going to become a victim of its powers.

  47. 1) The information about technology that surprised me the most was how so many people are addicted to playing virtual games online. Games like "Second Life" and "America's Army" offer players a virtual reality where they can act out things a normal human being could do. In "Second Life" you create a character and you basically live that characters life according to how you want to live it. You eat, sleep, make money, and communicate with other characters just as you would do in real life. It baffles me that people will spend so much time and money to play a game where all you do is live a virtual life. I believe that people play this game because they like the idea that they can control their entire life through a keyboard and mouse. The game "America's Army" is used as a recruitment tool for the United States. This is disturbing to know that the government of America is using a online video game to recruit people to join the army. What if one day you were playing Call of Duty and the government calls to ask you to join the army because you have a high score in the game. Playing a video game is drastically different then actually being out in the field with a rifle in your hand.

2)Technology has changed my life in many different ways. Every night before I go to sleep I have to check my phone for texts, tweets, and anything thing else that is keeping me connected. This is a negative thing for me because on days when I need to go to sleep I am up on my phone for hours at a time looking at all the information it feeds me. This impacts my sleep schedule and it causes me to sleep in and be late for school and work. Technology also has made my life a lot more easier and more convenient. I almost do all the things I can on a desktop computer in the palm of my hand. Technology helps me stay in touch with people who normally I would have very little contact with because I do not get to see them all the time. Even though technology shows how advanced our society has become we are too dependent on it. What if one day the internet just stopped working and never came back. A lot of people would not be able to live their lives happily just because they need the internet to do anything they think is entertaining. I know that I am very dependent on technology and if I did not have my phone with me for one day I would not feel the same as if I did.

3)Technology is changing our future in many different ways. More and more jobs that a normal human being would do, a robot or computer can do faster and cheaper. For a lot of people this could impact there life because they are losing there job. Technology is making society more and more dependent on it and it has taken over our lives. Even though technology has taken many jobs away I believe that in the future technology will create many new and different jobs for people. These jobs will be new jobs that have not existed before and will create an entire new job market. More people are now meeting new people online instead of in person because of technology. I believe that in the future this will happen more and more relationships will start from people meeting online.

    4) My perspective towards technology is that it helps us more than it hurts us. I am more of a optimist because I think that technology helps our life's to be so much easier. I believe that as a society we have evolved to include technology as a need rather than a want. Almost everything we do, technology is involved in some sort of way. Every day technology is advancing and becoming more and more a part of our lives.

    ReplyDelete
  48. 1) What surprised me the most about the information about technology the most was the amount of time people spend on it. Everyone relies on their phone's or computer's and spend less time actually getting out and interacting with people face to face. Also, the amount of time that we spend on the internet or watching T.V. really effects our physical fitness. Kids are growing up in a time where technology is readily available to them and I think that is one of the reasons that obesity is on the rise in Canada and in the United States.

    2) Technology has a lot of pro's and con's in my life. My phone or computer let me stay in touch with my friends and the people around me. If I did not have my phone or computer on me I most likely would not even know what time of the day it is. The con about this is that I have began to rely on technology way too much, because some days when my phone battery dies I`m totally lost and feel so disconnected.

    3) I think technology is changing our future by giving us access to more things from around the world without even leaving our room. People can start up their own business and sell things online to make money. People can even do their schooling online now without even going to a real school or meeting other people. In the future I think technology will make things more simple but it will also make people lazy and rely on it more.

    4) I`m more of a pessimist towards technology, because although I use it and agree it makes things easier, it makes people lazy and dependent on it. I would rather go outside and play or go and interact with people in person. People are so unaware of the world around them outside from the technology, that sometimes it freaks me out that they have a phone that is probably smarter than them.

  49. 1) There are a few things that surprise me about technology. One major thing is that there are many people facing addictions that alter their lives immensely, also there are people that lose grip of reality due to their ridiculous amount of Internet usage. For example, there are many rehab facilities around the world to help at risk people, because of their copious amount of Internet usage. All in all, it was very surprising to find out about the bad sides of an expansion in technology.
    2) Growing up, technology has changed my life exponentially. I feel that technology really does dictate my life a lot of the time. After acquiring numerous devices such as my iPhone, laptop and game consoles, the need to be on one of them is extremely high. I feel that at times I get sucked in so much, I lose hours of sleep and time to be outside. For example, at one point I had over 2 weeks of playing time on a video game (call of duty). This is when I noticed, technology can definitely be a problem. In conclusion, advances in technology may be fun and interesting, but it can be very bad for your health and overall living.
    3) The future is here, and it has been swarmed by technology. Everyday life has changed enormously, technology has changed the way people work, learn and communicate daily. People are able to do all of this things at home without it being necessary to leave your own home. This may become an issue as many people are losing their jobs due to these technology advances. All in all, the advancements with technology are amazing, but in the future it might start taking over in a bad way.
    4) I myself look at technology in a very optimistic way. I feel that the advances will allow people to get to goals they had always dreamed of reaching. I also feel that with all of these technological advances, life will become much easier on people. It will create a much more fun lifestyle filled with more leisure time and less time doing things that could have been done much easier with let's say, the push of a button. In conclusion, technology is advancing rapidly and I feel that it is the best for humankind in the long run!

  50. 1.The thing that surprised me the most in this unit was the amount of time people have spent playing virtual reality. Second Life, in particular, is highly disturbing. People seem to be fond of creating a more luxurious and comfortable lifestyle within Second Life, so much so that they have began putting at absurd amount of time recreating their characters to their likeness. This shocks me because people would choose to rather create a fake life to their liking rather than try to work and become more successful in life itself. Furthermore i find the governments ploy to try and recruit soldiers with a video game, rather unsettling. It seems as if they are trying to prey on citizens that like to play video games. Developments in virtual reality has slowed down individuals progress towards success as well as make us more vulnerable to deception.

2.I believe technology has helped make my life much more simpler. It has made difficult tasks, such as connection with people far away, much easier. Also I believe technology has greatly increased my intellect as well as my ability to learn. By having such vast resources of knowledge available to me at all times, I have been able to research and learn about topics i have interests in. However I believe that technology has had somewhat of a negative impact on me as well. Because technology simplifies most aspects of my life, some sort of dependency has been created. In addition I have noticed myself become lazier and procrastinate as a result of the dependency that has formed. All in all I believe that technology can have a positive impact if used for the right purposes.

    3. As technology continues to develop, there will be significant changes within our lives. Developments in machinery will allow our jobs to become much easier to preform, however some people will put out of jobs because of such advancements. As a result the economy will begin to decline. Furthermore i believe that it will make education simpler as more forms of learning will become available for all to use.on the other hand it will make certain aspects of our lives worse. Our ability to communicate with others as well as our ability to stay in a relationship will degrade. Technology will make peoples ability to interact socially worse.

    4. I see myself as an optimist with technology. although technology can make people lazier it also gives us the ability to learn on a much greater scale. as long as someone can regulate their amount of activity spent with technology, they can assure they do not become lazy. it is up to an individual whether technology will have a negative or positive effect on us.

  51. 1.In the last 10 year technology has grown by leaps and bounds but I never knew that technology can have such major impact on an individual’s life. I was shocked to hear that there is a thing called internet addiction and the problem has become so severe that certain countries across the world have set up internet addiction rehabs to help people overcome their addictions with the internet. Also another thing that surprised me was the fact that the American government spends billions of tax payers’ dollars to create a game called “American Army” which originally was made to train the real American soldiers but as time progressed they started using the game as a tactic to recruit young adults who play the game to join the American Army. America’s army is a tactical game which implies real life situation the American army faces. For example in the game the player playing the game must pass a virtual medical training course based on the actual training the soldiers have to go through in real life. Many people view this game as a propaganda device meaning the game influences the person playing the game to actually consider a career in the army showing you the only positives in becoming an American soldier. I’m finding it really difficult wrapping my head around the fact that one of the most feared army in the world use a video game to recruit soldiers to put their lives on the line for their nation.

  52. 2. In the last few years technology has played a major role in my life especially when it comes to homework. I am constantly distracted by my phone and I have a very bad habit of going on my phone every 5 minutes. At school when I get class time to complete my assigned homework I chose to go on my phone instead of completing my homework. At the time I say to myself that I will complete my homework at home but when I get home I start playing my Xbox online for many hours. Technology has made it nearly impossible for me to focus on one thing at a time. Once I finally start doing my homework I tend to keep getting distracted by messages in my phone. I think technology has made it extremely difficult for me to reach my potential when it comes to getting good grades because it’s really hard for me to just focus on completing my homework. Every time I do homework I sit in front of the TV screen or I go on my phone. Technology has made me extremely lazy physically and mentally. Instead of playing sports outside or going to the gym I rather sit on the couch for many hours and play video games. Also by having auto correction on my phone and my computer has made my grammar when it comes to writing terrible since I rely heavily on technology to correct my errors when writing. When I have to write at school on a piece of paper I make a huge amount of grammar mistakes. Also when I have homework instead of reading the textbook and finding out the answers I rather just go online and find the correct answer. Also I haven’t been getting enough sleep because I stay up long hours distracted by my phone or Xbox. In the morning when I go to school I am extremely tired so I can’t focus properly at school which has a huge impact on my grades. Kids can easily be exposed to explicit content by using the internet for example pornography which can alter the way a male views a female. We become accustomed to just communicating behind a screen which can decrease your communication skills in person. It is much easier to so say something through a text message then to say in person. For example breaking up with your girlfriend most people would find it much easier to break up over the phone or text message rather than breaking up in person. Texting has also decreased my communication skills instead of talking to someone in person or over the phone I rather just quickly text them which has limited my interaction in person with others.

  53. 3. Technology is changing every aspect of our lives. We literally have the world at our finger tips. Technology is constantly progressing and making our lives easier but is that good for our future. Jobs that once were done by humans are being replaced with machines. Many people are losing their jobs because technology has advanced at a rapid rate and replaced human workers with machines. For example stores such as Wal-Mart and Superstore have self-checkout lanes you no longer need a cashier to purchase groceries u can just purchase the items in the self-checkout lanes. We rely heavily on technology to make it throughout the day. As technology keeps growing we will keep becoming more reliant on it. As technology keeps increasing there is more harm that is associated with it. For example imagine if World War 3 was to occur. The whole world would get destroyed considering all the advancement in technology that has been made. The new powerful weapons and bombs would destroy everything on the planet. I think technology will continue to make life easier for us which will increase obesity since you no longer physically need to do anything. For example there are cars that are being created that will drive themselves meaning you no longer need a human being controlling the wheel the computer system in the car will control it by itself. Soon robots will be created to take over jobs that once people did. I think the technology that we created in the future such as robots will backfire on us and start going against humans. Technology is going to control every aspect of our lives as technology keeps advancing at a rapid rate. There are also many positive impacts technology has on society. The advancement in medical technology has saved millions of lives around the world. Scientist have found cure for many diseases such as the chicken pox which at one point had no cure. Slowly scientists are discovering ways to prevent cancer and I believe one day advancements in technology will help find a true cure for cancer. Things such as the computer and internet have made communication with others across the globe much easier. Now we can quickly find out what is going on around our world such as natural disasters that occur as the earthquake in Haiti and offer support for the ones affected by texting certain numbers through text to donate money through your phone bill.

    ReplyDelete
  54. 4. Personally I am more optimistic towards technology because advancements in technology have allowed us to discover things that would not be possible without technology. For example without technology who would have imagined there being a first human to ever walk on the moon. New technology has made it much easier and efficient to communicate with your loved ones that might live on the other side of the planet. Before the main form of communication were letters which took many days’ even months to reach the ones you loved, now on a click of a button you can instantly get connected with your loved one no matter what continent of the world they are in. I strongly believe that we can’t blame technology for humans increasing dependency on it that’s like blaming the knife for killing someone if a person used it to stab someone to death. Technology can have many positive impacts on us but humans need to find the right balance when it comes down to using technology. We can’t blame technology for our problems instead we as human beings should be held responsible for the negative effects of technology since we are the ones who have created it.

    1) What caught my eye was how people will spend time on a game that they recreate their self’s to make a second life. I'm surprised that people would put so much time in to something that doesn’t even sound like fun , they just create a fake self where they would do all the same things they could do in real life. Sending the time you could be using to improve your real self but instead they use it on a fake self that will never actually take them anywhere. I find there is a difference between a game about recreating your life and a game that gives you the ability to do things you could never do in real life. To put all that time and money in to something that only recreates a fake life is shocking and somewhat disappointing.

2)I have always been one not to fully notice what is going on so I cannot fully say how it has affected me. But it does give me the ability to do things I couldn't do that I was able to do before. To give a personal opinion upon how technology affects us today as a society I would be in the middle of being for or against technology because it does help us in many ways but also drags us down through the mud along a path of a degrading mind. I might not get the recommended amount of sleep in my opinion but I consider at least 5-6 hours is enough sleep for me. Technology has only a small part in how my body works. However it gives me things to do and to think about that I would have never dreamt of before. It brings me the peace and chaos I desire. It all comes down to the person whose holds it.

3)I think as technology changes we do as well, our way of learning, teaching, thought process all can be a good thing it can help create people smart enough to go further in life than before but it can also deny the rights of some by taking jobs. So I believe if we can come to a point of equality between the human race and technology we might have a prosperous future.

4)Our sosiociety is drastically changing alongside how advanced our technology is becoming. For me to fully say that I am on one side of the optimistic or pessimistic sides of the technology spectrum because our society gains benefits and am also negatively affected. To say that the technological advancements in science and medicine is a bad thing would be wrong to say, it is what there is to keep you alive but on the other hand the weapons and drugs which also come from those areas don’t help us to advance they keep us held down they both have their positive effects of improving us and our lives but also have their short comings that bring folly to the human race.

    Taranjit Jhita Technology Final Response

    1. Second life surprised me the most because people actually get addicted to that. They play for hours and use as much electricity each month as a real life Brazilian. Second life is virtual reality games where participants create their own avatar, own property, attend concerts, work and play much like your first life. Another thing that surprised me was the U.S government has been spending millions of dollars on a video game, Americas Army. This game was developed by the U.S army to train real American soldiers. This is basically a recruitment tool for the youth to come in and play the game, whole actual recruitment offices come to recruit them. I didn’t know that people actually have that much free time to play games for hours and how smart the US army is to recruit new soldiers.

    2. Technology is in my life all the time and always around me. I always have my phone on me and constantly looking at Facebook or twitter every 10-20 minutes. When I’m bored, I always end up checking it because it’s the only thing that comes to my mind. Also when I go to the gym, I always have my headphones in and always connected to my phone. Before I go to bed, I have a bad habit of going on Facebook and twitter and then I go to sleep. I never tried to not go on one day because I can’t fall asleep right away, so I just tend to look at Facebook and twitter. I think if I didn’t have my phone and laptop on me, I would have a bad day or I’d be getting really bored fast. When I’m with my friends, I randomly check Facebook for new sport posts. I never think twice about going on my phone and going on Facebook.

    3. Technology is significantly impacting our future by advancing in our work, learning, communication, and relationships. With technology improving, we can have great changes in the years to come. There will be new devices that will be available for people to get the task done faster and efficiently. Learning will be a new experience with more computer based material, an example like no more text books and no more pencils, always using Microsoft word. With more technology, I think there will be more time available for people to communicate with their family and friends. Technology will have great changes to our future.

    4. I think I am both an optimist and pessimist because it could go both ways. I am an optimist because it could be used to bring people closer and communicate with people around the world. It could bring them closer by calling, video chatting, and texting. It is easier to get in touch with people with special devices. The pessimist side is that people can easily get addicted to technology and start to lose their life. It could change your life forever causing anxiety, different sleeping patterns, and getting trapped in your own little cage. I don’t consider each option stronger because there are pros and cons for both that can help life.

  57. 1. I was very shocked to hear about the game “America’s Army”. While I had never heard of “Second Life” before the class, it didn’t surprise me as much as “America’s Army” did. The fact that America’s Army is used as a recruitment technique is, to be honest, scary. A kid, who may not know about the game’s true purpose, may have been innocently looking to play a game, but little do they know they are being scouted at the same time. It’s scary, because it is another recruitment technique which could lead to pressure for a young adult to enlist. I was also shocked by the rate at which technology has progressed. The information was not anything new, but learning about it gave me the opportunity to really consider just how fast technology has advanced and fully realize it. It is interesting the bounds we’ve taken in the world of technology ever since it first began, and how it has gotten progressively faster in advancement.
    2. I feel like technology has really impacted my life. Like many other teens my age, technology plays a big role in my everyday living, and to take away any form negatively impacts the way my day is run. One major way in which technology has impacted my life would definitely have to be the need to feel connected to everything. On things like the internet you always have constant updates on everybody’s personal life around you, and even the lives of those you are not in close proximity with. Another way technology has impacted me is keeping in touch with people. For example, earlier on in the year my cell phone was stolen. With the absence of a phone in my life, I found it quite refreshing to not feel the pressure of having to reply to people whenever they decide to text or message me. On the negative side, however, it’s difficult to make plans, or contact somebody I need to while I’m not at my house. I feel like technology has both positively and negatively affected the way I communicate with others, which has greatly impacted my life.
    3. Technology is one of the areas in which our world is changing, and the change of technology is bringing a change in the world entirely. There are so many things technology has allowed for us to do in our everyday life. We have contact with friends and family, we can look up information, we can play games for entertainment, all at the palm of our hands. Technology gives us the ability to connect with people all across our world. It gives us the opportunity to connect with people we may have never been able to connect with without the use of technology, and it helps us attain knowledge we may not have even be able to imagine. I believe technology will only improve our future knowledge of our world, and the different people within it.
    4. I am very optimistic when it comes to technology. While it does hold some negative impact in our lives, technology is not the problem; it is the people using it and the way it is used. Modern technology has been incredibly useful in the big picture, even though it may cause some issues with individuals. I think as technology continues to change and re-invent itself, so will the people consuming the technology. There are many areas technology can be used in, and there is no real harm in using technology for entertainment. Like I stated in my answer to question 3, modern technology is a revolutionary way in which others can connect and learn from one another from all across the globe. There are positives and negatives to everything in the world, but the question is always whether the pros outweigh the cons; and I believe, in the long run, they do.

  58. 1) The information that surprised me the most was the intensity of the virtual games, called “Second Life” and “America’s Army.” The fact that a protest took place in a game is unbelievable. The protest took place due to financial issues. Also, the internet camps that took place in South Korea. They took teenagers away from their homes to stop the use of technology for 10 days. The activates that took place in the camp were entertaining, but technology was never used. The teenagers played sports and interacted with each other like the good old days. Furthermore, I never realized, but being on a computer for such a long time can cause anxiety and somewhat of cancer due to the radio waves.

    2) Technology has drastically changed my life. Before, if I ever wanted to hang out with a friend it would be a simple house phone call and that’s it. Now a days, it’s all about texting or using social media. My sleeping pattern will never be the same due to technology. Nonstop on twitter making me sleep late at night. As of right now, I’m currently on twitter tweeting about this task and this is holding me back from finishing faster. Love? People break up through texts rather than in person. That’s ridiculous! Also, our thinking with vocabulary is poorly dropping. We rely on spell check and all these slang terms are taking place in this world.

    3) I definitely think technology is changing our future in various ways. One of the biggest ways is communication. Around the world, person to person conversations don’t take place as much as 10 years ago. Some relationships are over texts and other uses of technology, which reduces person to person communicating. Recently, one of my friends broke up with her boyfriend over a text message. The ability to interact with one another has been different year by year. Who knows how its going to be like in the upcoming years. Learning wise, Google is the answer. I personally search for results if I’m unsure of the answer. I don’t think as much cause the answer is always out there.

    4) I am in the middle of optimist and pessimist. It could go either way. Personally, it could be more of the optimist side because technology can be used to express feelings and emotions in a different way. Its showed through social media and some people feel more comfortable showing it on social media rather than speaking person to person about it. I do this with tweets from Twitter. It gets a whole load off of me. On the other hand, it can go the pessimist side. With this task, I’m relying on spell check and quickly typing. Vocabulary and the ability to think is dropping and we’re becoming blockheaded, but we don’t know it. If I were king of the world, I’d abolish all technology just for one day, to see what the outcome would be. Atrocious? Mind blasting? We’ll have to wait and find out.

  59. 1)The information that surprised me the most was the level of energy people put into the virtual game, "Second Life". Ironically enough it has actually turned into peoples second life. This is a virtual game where people can customize their avatar and make it do anything that you would want to do in real life. I was shocked to learn that people are addicted to virtual games such as this, and that many countries have actually invested in internet addiction rehabilitation camps for kids as young as 10. I was also very shocked at the game "Americas Army" that is being developed by the American Army. Basically it is a recruiting tactic that the Government is trying to deploy so that younger kids will be influenced to join the army. Although it is a smart brain washing idea, I still found both of these games to be a complete waste of time, money and health, and just another way for big money organizations to make more.

2)Technology has definitely played a significant role in my life, especially in the last few years when technology has taken major steps to advance its repertoire. Personally I have had many sleep deprived nights and lazy mornings because of the various things within my reach. The biggest distraction of all without a doubt would have to be my phone. The more time goes on, the "smarter" smart phones get, although such phones are helpful, they are impossible to put down. I am constantly checking my phone and getting distracted by it when i'm trying to my homework. As much as a distraction technology can be, it can also be a helpful thing as well, instead of writing out paragraphs such as this on plain line paper we are now used to submitting them online. Certain things such as spell check have become of such an assistance that we would be spelling words wrong left, right and center without it. Technology has also helped me stay in touch with more of my family and friends via text message, email, social networking and all kinds of stuff.

    3) I believe technology is changing and going to change our future an immeasurable amount. It is taking the place of many things that have become foreign to us which were the normal means of communication just a decade ago such as letters. Technology is making the world a faster and somewhat easier place to be. Getting a hold of someone has never been simpler, little things have made a big difference to how our world is shaping out. These days anything we need is literally in the palm of our hands, with a few simple swipes on your phone, you can do anything. The way it is going so far I can't begin to imagine what it is going to be like in 10 years

4)If I said I was a pessimist towards technology then I would also be a hypocrite. Although I think the internet and other technological advances are taking over peoples lives, I would not be able to go a day without my phone or other handy devices. To an extent technology can help a person and save a lot of time, but it can also suck you into a black hole that is really hard to get out of. I think it is hard to be just optimistic or pessimistic about technology because there are equal negative and positive results because of technology. Whether the world would be a better or worse place without it, one thing for sure is we can't ever expect it to be the same.

    1) The most surprising information I obtained about technology was how seriousy people take it, especially the games such as Second Life and America's Army. I personally didn't even know that there were such games, and I was completely shocked at how rooted poeple were into it and the fact that they actually made money off of it. The money the gamers make off of Gold-Mining is ridiculuos; half a billion (U.S dollars are spent each year on selling avatars. Another unbelievable fact on gaming was how the U.S has spent $32.8 billion on America's Army. I am postive that this money could have been used for better, more important issues such as poverty. America's Army serves as prpoganda for young men to come and die for the country and over glorifies war.

@)Technology has changed my life sustantially. It is used quite often in my everyday life and has both a psotive and negative effect on my life. It has increased my intimacy withy my friends because we are always connected via text messages. However it has a big toll on my sleeping patterns and school life, because it has become a bigger prioty thatn homework and sleep.

    3) I have a pessimist view on technology because it had made our generation extremely lazy and dependent on other things to do their work for them

1.What most surprised me was how addicted people could become to the virtual life games, “second life” I had heard of prior to the power point, however “Americas Army” sounds ridiculous but I think it is a wonderful idea from the view point of the American army. If teens are most compelled to play video games, and you need new recruits then I can clearly see how using this as a recruitment tactic would be the most appealing to the young adults of America.

2.Infobesity was touched upon in the power point as well and as I said I send over 200 text messages a day and I do think it affects us in negative ways.. in the “TED TALKS” video Sherry Turkle had a quote from a young student who said “ someday, someday I’d really love to learn how to have a conversation” this is so unbelievably true , I can have friends over on a Saturday night and if we cant think of things to converse about we just simply sit on our phones. This just proves that we don’t know how to hold a normal conversation at all. I find that it is one hundred percent true when they say that because you have so much accsess to information through technology your anxiety levels are far higher than normal. If I have a big test coming up, what do I do? I post about it on facebook and the more people discuss it with me and wish me good luck the higher my anxiety levels get because it becomes harder to get your mind off of what your worried about when your phone is beside you and it keeps reminding you when someone has made a comment on your status.

3.In the work field technology has changed us significantly people sit and email during conference meetings and even while in interviews because it has become a daily routine and is now acceptable , not to say that the increase and advances in technology haven’t also made the work place much easier and more convenient, but it’s interesting to think about how a few years ago sending an email while someone is speaking to you would have been considered rude. In relationships I think that technology will be your downfall, it’s no longer interesting to see your boyfriend at the end of the day simply because you might not have seen him all day but you where definatly with him throughout the day with his updates on facebook as well as text messages, you can no longer ask “hey babe, how was your day?” because you already know.

4.I am more of a pessimist, although that makes me a complete hypocrite seeing as I am more attached to my phone than I am to my pets. The way I look at it is, we are far too reliant on our technology. Can’t find a restaurant? There is an app for that. Don’t know how to read a map? Oh well google has idiot proof directions for you. What would become of the human race if one day, Technology failed us? Would we survive? I really don’t know anymore. Overall I think the technology we have today may very well be the end of us.

  62. I thought I knew a lot about technology but clearly I didn't. The fact that there's something called "Second Life" surprised me. People spend hundreds of their own money to keep up in a computer animated life. Maybe they're making up for their life that could be slacking, or just a second identity to be something that they aren't. For example WoW (World of Warcraft) players spend countless hours and loads of money on a computer.

    2) Technology has altered my life both positive and negative. Technology has made things easier in my life, for example, it's now easier to stay in touch with people and entertain myself with countless apps for my phone and games for my gaming console. Technology helps making the boring times fun once again, with video games that I could play with my friends that are in a different part of town all the while playing with over one million other people. With all the fun in video games I also had 2 weeks of my grade 10 life gone to just one video game. Spending countless levels killing noobs (new comers to the game), winning games but losing sleep, going to bed at 4am waking up at noon and repeating my day of games. Its upsetting looking back and seeing days wasted when I could have been running for mayor.

    3) Technology has both it's ups and downs. For example technology has further enhanced the capability of human such as space travel, computers, biochemical engineering, etc. Technology has helped us advance, it can help people stay a live and help find wants wrong with people via cat scans. On the other hand technology can cause us to be distant from one another as we spend time talking through telephone rather than to face to face. It can break a family apart or even be the reason why someone has lost their job due to photos from years and years ago. Or simply texting on the job can get you off the payroll. Technology has also run down company's such as Rogers Video and clerks are the supermarket with self check outs.

    4) I'm an optimist of technology, I use technology everyday with thing such as the skytrain, cellphone, television and Internet. But I do think that technology shouldn't be praised because it does just as much good as it does bad, with things as Internet addictions and the lose of jobs. It's safe to say it would be extremely difficult to not use technology for a day since we rely on it way more than we should, I'm writing this on my phone and posting it on a website for crying out loud.

1)The most surprising information I obtained about technology was how seriously people take it, especially the games such as Second Life and America's Army. I personally didn't even know that these games existed and I was completely shocked at how rooted people were into it and the fact that they actually made money off of it. The money the gamers make off of gold-mining is ridiculous; half a billion U.S dollars are spent each year on selling avatars. Another unbelievable fact on gaming was how the U.S has spent $32.8 billion on America's Army for recruitment purposes. I am positive this money could have been used for more important and better issues such as poverty. America's Army serves as propaganda for young men to come and die for the country and over glorifies war. I don't understand how brainwashing adolescents in favor of war is ever justified.

    2) Technology has changed my life substantially. It is used quite often in everyday life and in my case it has both a negative and positive effect. It has increased my intimacy with my friends and family because we are now always connected via text messages and social media, constantly getting updates about each others lives and activities. However, technology has taken a big toll on my school life and sleeping patterns. Once on social media sites or even the T.V I always loose track of time and leave school work to the last minute because of more "important" shows or movies I HAVE to watch. This leads to late night cramming and rushed homework, all reflecting in my poor marks on assignments. Sometimes i become so occupied in technology that everything else looses its significance and technology seems to prioritize itself over things that should require more attention

    3) Technology is changing our future in every aspect. I don't think there is a single area of life that it hasn't effected. Technology makes life so much more convenient and easy. With the newer advances in technology everyday, we have solutions for the most complicated problems presented to us human beings. Getting people together is a lot easier; all that is needed is a simple text or email. I believe that communication skills are getting heavily strained because nothing happens face to face anymore, whether it's saying happy birthday or applying for a job, its all done behind a screen of some sort. Many relationships develop off line and more "I love you"'s are exchanged via text message decreasing the value of some sentimental saying which get thrown around without meaning or emotion

    4) I am both a pessimist and optimist when it comes to technology. Technology has helped us humans advance in so many ways such as health care which makes saving lives and curing diseases a lot easier. Technology such as planes and cars has helped us get where we want in emergencies. However most of us take advantage of technology and use it as an excuse to not get up and do things ourselves. Why walk across the street when u can take your car and waste gas? I feel that it has made our generation so lazy because we can do everything with the click of a button and we always look for shortcuts to get us what want with absolute minimal effort.

  64. 1) the information that surpried me was that kid in asia are so addicted to the computer that they eventually end up in a camp. Where they learn how to interact with people pyhsiccally rather then on a computer. while the kids are at camp they learn to play games with each other. they learn that there is a world outside of there compture screens. being on the computure all day they were slowly starting to forget how to vebarlly communicate with other people.

2)the way technology has changed my life is the way i write on paper and how i talk to people. it has changed the way i write such as i start to abbreviate on a lot of things lol, omg, rowlf, tht ect... the way it affects my speaking that i start speaking in slang. The way it affects my anxiety is that i am so used to chacking my phone and computer for the latest update on social networks.

3)the way technology is changing out future is that when we go for a job interview the manager or employer researches about you on facebook, twitter or any other social media networks. the rason for this is that they can seee the type of person you are on a daily basis. The way its changing the way we learn is that instead of actually trying to learn something new on your own you can search up on the internet on how to do it. The way it is changing our communication skills is that we find it easier to text message someone then to say it directly to their face.

4)I am both optimistic and pessimstic towards technology. technology is something we use on a daily basis such as cellphones, tvs, computers, iopds ect... because of technology we have became such advance in ways such as health care, business and many more. On the other technology has made us really lazy that we depend on technology to help us with the littlest things in life, such as remebering something. Now of days we can set up a reminder on our phones or computer to remind us of special dates. we feeel like that everything can be done with a click of a botton. So we can get things without any effort

  65. 1) What information about technology surprised you the most? Why?
Technology has surprised me a lot and especially the fact people spend numerous amount of hours in front of screen was something that surprised me a lot. For instance, "Youth spend 7.5 hours a day in front of a screen, multitasking 11.5 hours everyday." There is not an equal opportunity among people , for example, "4 percent white, 16 percent African America, 25 percent Hispanic youth have never been online." The fact there are many people who have never been online, I do not find that fair. In this day of age, everyone should be given the opportunity to utilize a computer and go online. The fact that youth spend 7.5 hours in front of a screen and 11.5 hours multitasking sort of bothers me because I fall under that category. It seems that it does not seem to me as if I spend those money hours, but in reality I probably am doing that which is not healthy.
    2) Technology has impacted my world for better and worse. For example, although I may be writing this on my laptop, I am heavily distracted by other things as well. Notifications on Facebook, emails, sports scores, and etc are all a great distraction. The longer I get distracted while I am typing this, the longer it is going to take me to finish this assignment. I am going to have to stay up late finishing this because of my foucs and that will affect my sleep cycle the next day. I tend to do this often now, stay up late and finish assignments and homework, while being distracted with technology earlier in the day which has begun to affect my concentration during school. I am trying to work on a fix for this bad habit because this ruins my punctuality and wherever I go I feel very tired. On the other hand, technology has had a positive affect if I look at it in a positive way. I do not need to carry a book and pen on me at all times to record whatever I need to because I have my technology(phone) on me which I can use to record my notes. For sample, "I was taking the sky train to Waterfront the other day and I had a thought that was really important, but I did not have a pen or book on me. I took out my phone and recorded my thought in my notes app." If this situation had occurred 20 years back, I would have had to find a different alternative. My phone and laptop are a great contributor to my positive view on technology because due to them, I can play music on my phone/laptop, I have video games, I can do my work, and etc. Technology has changed my life in many ways and hopefully it will continue to do so.

    QUESTIONS 1-2(BY GURVIR)

    ReplyDelete
  66. 3)In what ways do you think technology is changing our future (work, learning, communication, relationships, etc)?
Technology is changing our future in many ways. For example, I am using my phones note pad to write my technology assignment at the moment. Realistically, I should be using a pen or pencil when I am working, but due to the significant technology improvements over the years, I am not. Certain improvements in technology have caused great changes the way we work, learn, communicate, our relationships, and etc. For instance, many singles have begun to look for partners for relationships on the internet. Many sites like Facebook and marriage sites are creating couples with the progression of the internet. The way we learn has significantly been alternated forever, we now learn on computers , tablets, ipods and etc in comparison to traditional learning in schools from teachers. For example, students now go on Youtube or Google to learn concepts if they don't understand something, which has destroyed the teacher and student relationship forever. We communicate with one another when we need to text. A sample, I text my friends when I have to tell them something instead of calling them. This form of communicating with advancement of technology has limited people to communicate among one another vocally. We are now updating with each other on Facebook or other forms of social media. While this may be a good thing as it allows us to say in touch, it indirectly is making us distant from each other as well.

    4) Describe your perspective towards technology. Are you more of an optimist or a pessimist? Why? Explain.
In terms of technology, I am sitting on a fence between two yards because there are many benefits of technology and there are many negative views of technology. There is a great over usage and misuse of technology for school work, and basically for everything we do. For example, "Youth spend 7.5 hours a day in front of a screen, multitasking 11.5 hours everyday." As it is shown in this sample, we do not realize what the over usage of technology is disconnecting us from. We are simply being disconnected from people around us and the world us as well when we are focussing on screens, such as a computer or video games. For instance, many people are using Facebook as a way to communicate with friends and family. As they do so, they are not vocally communicating with one another and are being more distant from each other as time is progressing. When we need to tell our friends that we are coming over, we tend to send the text them instead of calling them. At the same time, technology is proving that it is mandatory for this day of age and it is improving the living of people. For example, the continued improvement of LED lights. LEDs can have a big impact in decreasing energy consumption and this is a great benefit towards humans. Hence, although technology may have pros and cons, I am in the middle when I have to decide if I am optimist or pessimist.
